Save Gmail Attachments to Google Drive Automatically

ku-xlarge
It’s easy enough to selectively save Gmail image attachments to Google Drive, but if you want to automate the process, tech blog Digital Inspiration shares a script that makes the archiving happen automatically. The script runs in the background of Gmail, and when you get a new attachment it automatically sends it over to a folder called “Gmail Images” in your Google Drive.
Here’s how you can deploy the script in three easy steps:
  1. Open the script in Drive and choose File->Make a copy to create a personal copy of that script in your Google Drive.
  2. Choose Run->Authorize to grant the necessary permissions. The script basically needs permissions to read your Gmail inbox and for writing files into your Google Drive Folder.
  3. Once authorized, choose Run -> StartProgram and the script will start working in the background.
You can now exit the Google Script.
Internally, the Google Script will create a new folder called “Gmail Images” in your Google Drive and all images attachments are saved in this folder. Once a message thread has been scanned for attachments in Gmail, a label “Processed” will be added to that thread so that the script can skip it in the next iteration.

HTC Rumored to Cancel Plans for Full-Size Windows RT Tablet

According to an internal source, HTC has abandoned launching a full-size Windows RT tablet. The main reason is that the company is worried that the product will not have a large market demand.
Due to the high cost of this product, together with the low interests for Windows RT devices, HTC decided not to manufacture the product. However, the company still plans to release a 7-inch tablet with an ARM processor and the same operating system. And it’s scheduled for be released later this year.
HTC is currently dealing with declining sales and the shrinking share of such unfavorable circumstances, while adjusting the management to launch products more selectively and effectively. As per market analyst firm’s IDC statistics, Microsoft’s Windows RT product sales have been stagnant since released in last October and now probably only sold 200,000 units. Nevertheless, HTC is to launch a smaller tablet in September or October this year. The cost of the product is relatively lower, and the market demand is likely to be higher.

Get ready to Start again with Windows 8

For all you nostalgia windows fans who have complained, threaten to commit suicide or just got mad because of the changes that occurred on the Windows 8 operating system will no longer have to worry again. The BBC’s technology section has written an article about Windows will return to having the ‘Start’ button again. The Financial Times has caused this incident by saying that Windows 8 without the ‘Start’ button was the “most prominent admissions of failure for a new mass-market consumer product since Coca-Cola’s New Coke fiasco nearly 30 years ago”. Windows were upset about the comment and now looking into it, and this will mean the return of the ‘Start’ button.

Google Now Showing Nutrition Information in Searches

food-pyramid
We would almost forget that under all those services Google offers, Google is still a search engine. Google’s latest feature in its core search engine is displaying Nutrition Information in searches. According to Google, we’ll soon be able to search for info such as: “How much sugar is in a grape?” and even more complex searches like “How many calories are in a Pizza?” Serving up information to help you adjust your diet and serving sizes, we’ll soon all be able to live healthier by just conducting a quick Google search.
The information will be pulled from Google’s Knowledge Graph, which helps you to find hard-to-access info in one convenient place. Everyone in the US should be able to use the Nutrition Search function somewhere within the coming 10 days and the rest of the world will have to wait a bit longer.

How Google Is Finally Fixing Android’s Deepest Flaw

k-bigpic
You might have noticed that Google didn’t announce a flashy new Android version nor a next gen self driving car during its annual I/O conference. But what it did was fixing Android’s deepest flaw, you couldn’t buy a phone that came with a squeaky clean version of Android and no bloatware. Next to Google’s Nexus Line of phone, you can now also get the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One without extra manufacturer installed software. But this will come at a price, phone won’t be subsidized by providers.

Gmail Gets a New Tabbed View

Google is rolling out a major update for Gmail, adding tabs to the top of your inbox to automatically categorize smart labels such as promotions and social updates.
According to the official Gmail blog, you’ll be able to select which categories will be enabled as tabs (Social, Promotions, Updates, or Forums, as well as “Primary” for your classic inbox). The tabs will show you how many new emails you have for each category and offer another way to organize your inbox. You’ll be able to drag-and-drop messages between tabs and set specific senders to always appear in a certain tab.
Don’t worry if this isn’t to your liking (it might not be if you prefer the Priority Inbox or other non-default Gmail view, which the tabs won’t work with). You’ll be able to turn off this tabbed view if you wish.

Put All Your Cloud Services Into One with Jolidrive

jolidrive-connect
Cloud services are everywhere, and you probably have at least a few accounts all over the web. Jolidrive takes all those services and rolls them into one, simple interface.
Perhaps you have files in Dropbox, but prefer Google Drive for documents. Maybe you take photos with Instagram, but keep the majority of your collection in Flickr. Jolidrive can access all of those accounts from a single location so you don’t have to go all over the web looking for individual files. While Jolidrive doesn’t support every single cloud service at this moment, it does work with many popular ones. In addition to those previously mentioned, YouTube, Box, SkyDrive, Facebook, Instapaper, Tumblr, Google+ (kind of), Readability, Vimeo, Picasa, and more all work.
While Jolidrive doesn’t cost anything, you have to promote it on social media in order to unlock some of the aforementioned services. While that isn’t a high price to pay, I’d personally rather pay actual money than be used as an advertising platform—even if I like the product (which I obviously do or this post wouldn’t exist). Nevertheless, Jolidrive offers a fantastic interface and connects tons of services together with ease. If you can get past the social media sharing (or implement a workaround), it’s a great way to keep all your cloud data in one central location.

Opera 15 is Opera Next

speed-dial-opera-15
Opera Software today released the first beta version of its flagship browser that uses the open-source WebKit rendering engine, making good on a pledge from February. Google, however, is ditching WebKit for its own variant, called “Blink,” andOpera has promised to follow in Chrome’s footsteps. The shift to WebKit is the first step.
“Opera for desktop has [been] completely re-engineered under the hood,” the company said in a statement. “With the Chromium engine, users get a standards-compliant and high-performance browser.”
The updated rendering engine gives Opera 15 a score boost on things like HTML5test.com, up from 404 to 433 out of 500. A cursory browse of the Web suggests that the new browser does a decent job of rendering webpages. In many ways, that’s the point of Opera’s decision to drop its old Presto rendering engine and switch to WebKit. Opera’s low market share meant that regardless of the technical merits of its engine, many sites weren’t tested with it. Hence, compatibility was always a concern. WebKit doesn’t have that problem, and Blink shouldn’t, so by changing engines Opera users can expect far fewer issues.
The new tab page has three sections. Opera’s most distinctive feature, Speed Dial, is the first of these. It shows big tile icons for sites that you visit regularly, with folders so that sites can be organized and kept tidy.

Easily Add Social Network Feeds to Your Email Sidebar

powerinbox-apps_
PowerInbox is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer that adds a sidebar to your Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo! mailboxes that lets you keep an eye on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and more. This extension lets you keep up with what’s happening without leaving your email tab.
PowerInbox adds a sidebar to your email inbox and shows you your feeds for each of the services you’ve added directly there. It also allows you to see icons for emails sent by services it recognizes. Once installed, the PowerInbox menu appears in the top bar of your Gmail, Hotmail/Outlook Mail or Yahoo! Mail account. Open it and select ‘Sidebar’. With the sidebar enabled, you can get started by adding your first apps. For each service that you add, you will have to sign in to it and authorize it to connect with your account. The sidebar can be minimized so that it appears as a single column of buttons, or maximized to view feeds from the apps. You can add more apps by clicking the plus button.
Once you’ve authorized your accounts to connect with the apps you’ve enabled, you can open the sidebar to read your latest feeds, or to share an update to a particular network.

Leap Motion Windows 8 Gesture-Control Demo

Leap Motion has rolled out a preview of its gesture-control functionality on Windows 8. It allows users to go hands-off when using their computer, controlling via gestures made in front of the display without actually touching the screen. Just like in a sci-fi movie.
It allows you to perform touch actions without a touchscreen and without using any stylus. The device connects to a PC via USB, and works out of the box. You can see real use demo video below.

As you might suspect, the device’s usefulness extends beyond just tapping Windows tiles and scrolling through web results. As with a touchscreen device, it can be used to sketch, to sign digital documents, and to play games, among other things. Says Leap Motion, this video is a preview for those interested to check out before the device enters beta testing next month, during which period developers will get to use the unit.

Unroll.me – Clean Your Email Inbox and Get Rid of The Unwanted Subscriptions

unroll.me-illustration
Like we’ve said before, clean inbox means less stress for you. However, trying to have a clean and tidy inbox could be pretty frustrating experience especially if you’re subscribed to many newsletters. That’s exactly where Unroll.me jumps in. With this handy tool you can really forget about a bunch of unread emails and finally can start making your inbox manageable.
Here’s how it works:
Head to the Unroll.me site and choose Gmail/Google Apps or Yahoo Mail, click the box to agree to Unroll.me’s terms and conditions, and hit the Go button. If you are currently logged into your account, Unroll.me will ask for permission to access it. Click the Allow button and select one of two options: get Unroll.me’s unsubscribe feature along with its daily Rollup e-mail digest of your subscriptions or just get the unsubscribe tool with your active subscriptions still arriving individually and directly to your inbox as before.
After making your selection, Unroll.me scans your inbox for a few seconds while showing you a tutorial of how the service works. Click through the tutorial and then click the red View Rollup button. Next, you’ll see a list of the subscriptions it found. For each, you can click the minus button to unsubscribe or the arrow button to have it be delivered directly to your inbox instead of getting rounded up in the daily Rollup. (For some subscriptions, you’ll see a button with a gear icon instead of a minus sign; for these, you are taken to the unsubscribe page of the site of the subscription in question.) At the top of the screen, you can select a delivery time for your Rollup: Morning, Afternoon, or Evening.

At the top of each Rollup, it shows you any new subscriptions it found. These new arrivals will get added to your Rollup on the first of the following month, or you can choose to add all of them manually to my Rollup, keep all in your inbox, or edit each individually. Below, broken out by category, are the messages from subscriptions you had already added to your Rollup. For these, you’ll see the sender’s name and the subject line. Clicking on a message in your Rollup opens a page on the Unroll.me site in a new tab where you can read the message in its entirety.

Windows OS: What are Libraries and How to Use Them

2library
The Libraries feature in Windows 7 makes it easier to manage your files and folders. The Libraries feature in Windows 7 provides a central place to manage files that are located in multiple locations throughout your computer. Instead of clicking through a bunch of directories to find the files you need, including them in a library makes for quicker access. To access the libraries in Windows 7, type libraries into the search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter.
Using Libraries
In these examples we’ll take a look at the Documents Library, but the procedures will work for any library you want to add locations to. If you’ve been working in Windows 7 for a while and storing documents to the My Documents folder, when you open the Documents Library, you’ll see those documents. Some applications install folders in the My Documents folder by default and you’ll see those as well.
What if you have documents stored in a folder other than My Documents? You need to add it to the Documents Library. There are a couple of ways you can go about it. Right-click on a folder and select Include in library from the context menu, then choose the Documents Library. Keep in mind that when you add a folder to a library, that folder is still in it’s original location.
Or when you have the folder containing your documents open, select Include in library and choose the library to put them in from the dropdown.
Here we take a look at the Documents library that contains files that are located in different places throughout the hard drive, including some on another partition.
You can also remove items from libraries as well. When you’re in a library click on the locations link.
The Documents Library Locations window opens up and from here you can add or remove locations.
Create New Libraries
The default libraries are all well and good, but if you really want to take advantage of this feature, you’ll want to create your own. While in the libraries directory click on the New librarybutton and give it a name.
In this example we made a new library called Work Projects. The first time you open it you’ll be prompted to include a folder.
Browse to the location with the files you want to add then click Include folder.
Now the files included in that folder will show up in the new library.
After you’ve created some libraries they’ll be added to the list to select from.
Add Network Locations
While libraries are a handy new feature, it’s not perfect. Not all folders can be added to libraries as Microsoft has stuck some rules on them. You can pretty much add anything from a local drive, including other volumes or partitions. External USB drives formatted as NTFS or Fat32 can be added as well. Things get kind of weird when you’re trying to add network and non-indexed locations.
Thankfully there’s a handy free utility you can use that makes adding network locations a lot easier. Win7 Library Tool is small and straight forward to use. Just click on the Create a new library button.
Then add the network location you want included in the library. Notice this tool will also allow you to easily change the library icon which is a neat additional feature.
In this example we’ve added a home network share that contains music files to a library named MP3 library.
Conclusion
This should help get you started using Libraries in Windows 7, which at first might take some getting used to. Once you understand how they work and start creating your own, you’ll find they’re actually pretty useful. Once you get going, you’ll find the Win7 Library Tool makes adding network locations a snap. How about you? Do you use libraries in Windows 7? Leave a comment and let us know what you like or don’t like about the feature.

Android Authority Reviews The ThL W100

Android Authority recently wrote an article about one of ElectroShopWorld’s recent releases, the “ThLW100”. This mobile phone is one of ElectroShopWorld’s elite quad core Android 4.2 phones, and as mention by Android Authority, it comes from a Chinese home grown brand that has already domestic stores available. With more than 10 years of experience manufacturing Android Phones, ThL has managed to establish a broad customer base in both Europe and America.
The review tested the “ThL W100” in several areas as well as comparing it to more well known international branded phones. The reviewer seemed impressed by how much phone you get for the really low price that the “ThL W100” costs. The author of the review firstly goes into detail about the phone’s hardware, especially the A7 quad core processor, and the benefits that come with using this processor. Another area the review mentions is the overall size and weight of the “ThL W100”, mentioning it is extremely light due to the materials that are used that helps reduce overall weight.
One of the things I liked from this review of the “ThL W100” from Android Authority is the comparison of the screen against a HTC One S and a Nexus 7.
Although the HTC One S offers deeper coloring, I think the W100 is actually the best of the three displays (in terms of color at least).”
The photo below was taken by the reviewer and clearly displays the difference in quality of the same photo on each of the products that were being compared including the “ThL W100”.

Software was discussed briefly, with the review mentioning any changes that are different from previous versions and also what programs come pre-installed. There was no issue when downloading any apps and the review seems satisfied from the visual aspect.
Next section that was reviewed about the “ThL W100” was the performance where it was tested using AnTuTu software. The result was very good with the “ThL W100” getting high a score compared to other brands. The phone scored 13,041, which was higher than older branded quad core phones such as the Motorola ATRIX 4G and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Overall the phone performed well and there were no lags or annoying pauses. It felt as fluid and usable as any of the Android devices I have at hand, maybe even better.

The camera was tested with results showing that the 8 megapixel camera on this phone is really good and can capture details, even on a close up. Also the battery was mention, and the person writing the review seem to like how the phone came with two batteries making it easier to go further without having to worry about finding a power socket. One of the batteries can last over 5 hours of video playing and 3 hours of game playing.
The review finished with a conclusion, and the person that wrote the review mentions that some people may hesitate to buy from China due to its reputation but that shouldn’t but people off and even offer a link providing advice. He even said that the price alone is a huge selling point and he would be interested in this phone if it only had half the specs. He mentions that the phone may causes some negative reactions when concerning the 3G due only using two 3G bandwidths but how that really shouldn’t be a factor when concerning all the other specs of this phone.
Overall I would like to thank Android Authority for taking the time to review one of ElectroShopWorld’s mobile phones. ThL is a brand that is coming along way and I also own a ThL as they are very impressive for the price. ThL is a vastly growing company and if their phones stay up-to-date while maintaining a low price then they will surely expand.

Use Keyboard Shortcuts Like a Pro

Keyboard shortcuts are the easiest way to do things faster, but with the wide variety of software we all use it’s hard to remember all the different shortcuts. In turn, even though we all know shortcuts are useful, few of us bother using them. This cheat sheet includes almost the all common shortcuts which could speed up and help your daily work on the computer. If you need to really learn these set the below image up as a desktop background, or print it and place it on your wall (click to expand or right-click to save):
keyboard_shortcuts
In addition to the above listed shortcuts, I’d add some more:
F2 – rename a file
Ctrl+Shift+ Left or Right arrow – select a word in a text
Ctrl+Backspace – delete the whole word in a text (before the cursor)
Ctrl+Delete – delete the whole word in a text (after the cursor)
Shift+Delete – Delete file permanently (not to recycle bin)
Win+D – show the desktop
Did we forget some useful shortcuts? Let us know in the comments!

What is Bluetooth Smart?

As we recently wrote, the next Android versions will support Bluetooth Smart technology. Bluetooth v4.0 is the most recent version of Bluetooth wireless technology. It includes a low energy feature that is the basis for Bluetooth Smart devices. Bluetooth v4.0 introduced low energy technology to the Bluetooth Core Specification, enabling new Bluetooth Smart devices that can operate for months or even years on tiny, coin-cell batteries. Markets for these new devices include health care, sports and fitness, security, and home entertainment.
This generation of Bluetooth is split into two groups: Bluetooth Smart Ready and Bluetooth Smart. To understand why the tech has been split, you first have to look at the challenges facing Bluetooth as we know it. Those challenges are battery drain and the constant pairing and re-pairing of connected gadgets. Bluetooth 4.0 is designed to be more intelligent (hence: Bluetooth Smart) about managing those connections, especially when it comes to conserving energy. The new generation of Bluetooth tech places less emphasis on maintaining a constant stream of information. Instead, it focuses on sending smaller bits of data when needed and then puts the connection to sleep during periods of non-use. When two 4.0 devices are paired, they waste less battery power because the connection is dormant unless critical data is being shared. With the previous generation of Bluetooth, it was best to shut down your hardware when it was not in use.

What is Bluetooth Smart Ready?

Bluetooth Smart Ready gadgets are primary devices—think smartphones, notebooks, and tablets—that can receive and share Bluetooth signals from such accessories as speakers, headphones, fitness accessories, etc.

What is Bluetooth Smart?

These peripherals connect to Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. Bluetooth Smart gadgets can also remain paired with Smart Ready devices even when they’re not used for hours or days at a time.

Backward compatibility

Newer laptops, phones, and slates with Bluetooth Smart Ready radios built in will work with previous-generation Bluetooth peripherals. Essentially, if you have a Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphone or notebook, you can still use it to stream podcasts to your Bluetooth 3.0 wireless speaker system or headphones. So no need to throw out those headsets or portable speakers.

Bluetooth Smart explained on video:

Protect Your Privacy with These Browser Extensions

extensions
There are many browser extensions that are promoted as a good and safe tool to surf the web. However, in a vast supply one must ask himself – which extension is the best for me? Is this just a marketing trick or really useful add-on? Read on to find out the answers.
We’ve talked about why you should careabout your privacyseveral times here, so whether you choose to do something to protect yourself is up to you—we’re not going to rehash it. Instead, we’re going to dive into the tools available to keep your data safe. Most of them fall into three groups: add-ons that prevent third parties from tracking your movements, add-ons that block ads and scripts, and passive security tools that enforce good habits. Don’t worry, though. You don’t need to download a ton of apps to keep yourself safe and your data close to pocket. Here are the best in each group.
Here we are going to list out only our main recommendations. If you want to see some alternatives, visit the Lifehacker.com where they are explained more detailed.

Block Ads, Scripts, and Popups with AdBlock Plus

Ad and script blockers give you control over your browsing experience. They can block ads on the sites you visit and kill third-party scripts and widgets that send your data to who knows where. However, with great power comes great responsibility: If you don’t know how to use them, these tools can break the sites you read, rendering them unusable until you figure out what to allow and what to block. Plus, blocking ads can has a very real impact on the site and the people who work on it (like us here at Lifehacker). Even so, it puts the power into your hands to decide which sites are worth supporting and which are just too annoying to use without an ad-blocker.
AdBlock Plus (Firefox/Chrome) blocks banner ads, pop-up ads, rollover ads, and more. It stops you from visiting known malware-hosting domains, and also disables third-party tracking cookies and scripts. We think it has the right combination of ease-of-use, on-and-off toggling, and hands-off management that makes it a tool that anyone can pick up and use. Power users can get their hands dirty with different subscription lists and tweaking the active lists they use, but basic users can enable it and walk away.

Stop Everyone from Tracking You with Disconnect

Anti-tracking and anti-cookie extensions have exploded recently. We covered a number of them when we discussed how you can stop companies from tracking your movements on the web. Since then, the market has only grown, with more extensions and apps that all honestly do the same thing, with little more than UI tweaks and differences between them.
Disconnect (Firefox/Chrome/IE/Safari) is our pick because it continues to add useful features and improve its database, and its secure Wi-Fi and bandwidth optimization features aren’t available in other tools. It blocks third party tracking cookies and gives you control over all site scripts and elements from a simple-to-use toolbar menu. It also protects you from tracking by social networks like Facebook, Google, and Twitter, which use your browsing even off-site to collect data about you. Finally, Disconnect protects you from sidejacking (or widgetjacking), where an attacker can use stolen cookies to access personal data without having to know your password, with its Secure Wi-Fi feature.

Additional Privacy Tools You Should Have

In addition to privacy protecting tools and ad blockers, a few other add-ons, utilities, and services came up while we were researching this piece that you shouldn’t roam the web without.
HTTPS Everywhere (Firefox/Chrome) is a must-have regardless of what other security tools you opt to use. Once installed, the extension will shunt your connection to SSL whenever possible, and will try to find secure versions of the sites you visit. It’s a great way to protect your browsing without really lifting a finger. It can break some sites that weren’t meant to work with HTTPS though, so you may have to whitelist sites from time to time if the secure version doesn’t work.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts all of your internet traffic and offers the most possible protection from prying eyes. We’ve covered VPN services in detail before, including what to look for, what makes a good one, and some great providers to try. Look for a provider that keeps only the minimum required logs for troubleshooting purposes, offers strong encryption, is well regarded by its users, and offers multiple exits locations. Contrary to common belief, don’t just spring for any offshore VPN—just because your VPN provider is in a far-off country doesn’t mean it’s secure, or at all private. For more suggestions, our friends at TorrentFreak just updated their list of providers that take your anonymity seriously, and it looks a bit like ours. If you’re just looking for a free or freemium service to keep you protected while you’re out and about, and you’re not ready to try on a full, paid, VPN service yet (or roll your own), try Hotspot Shield, Hideman, or Tunnelbear.
Antivirus and Antimalware utilities are essential to protecting security. It may sound like “How to Internet: 101,” but taking care to avoid suspicious sites, practice good internet hygiene (eg, not opening suspicious attachments, checking file names before you download, etc), and keep updated antivirus and antimalware tools on your PC is important. Often the term “privacy” is couched in terms of advertising and marketing, but the risk of identity theft and getting infected with ransomware is growing. We’ve recently updated our pick for the best antivirus app for Windows, and we have some options for Mac as well. Looking for antimalware? These suggestions will get you started.

Download Subtitles for Movies on Your Mac Automatically

mac-movies
OS X: We’ve shown you how to download subtitles for movie files on your computer through services like Opensubtitles or Subscene, but Subtitles for Mac makes the process as simple as dragging and dropping a video file.
Once you open the app, just drag a video onto the clapperboard. Assuming the file name is a near enough match for the title of a known movie, Subtitles will automatically query the Opensubtitles database and download a matching .srt file into the same directory as the video file. It’s not doing anything magical; you could find the same files yourself if you wanted without too much trouble, but this will save you a bunch of time if you’re updating a large video library.

If you want to play the video through XBMC or VLC, you’re good to go, but you can also use Handbrake as described in our guide to embed the subtitles in your video file for viewing on other devices.
