Smartphones out-shipped feature phones for the first time ever worldwide

Q1 2013 marks the first time that smartphones made up the majority of cellphones shipped across the world, according to numbers from industry analyst IDC. 216 million handsets with computer-like functionality left factories compared to 419 million total, making up a solid 51.6 percent of the pie. Another trend spotted by the pollster was the emergence of Chinese phone makers, particularly ZTE and Huawei, who’ve notably displaced Blackberry and Nokia in the top five for smartphones sold.
Meanwhile, Samsung improved its lead over Apple in smartphone shipments over last quarter, jumping from 29 percent to a 32.7 percent share in Q1, while Apple slid from 23 percent to 17.3 percent. Sony dropped out of the top 5 in that category, while LG surged to 3rd place at 10.3 million units shipped, with Huawei and ZTE rounding out the top 5.

Mother’s Day Gift Suggestions By ElectroShopWorld

The second Sunday of May every year for most parts of the world is the day of celebration to that wonderful lady that brought you into today’s world, the bearer of your life who has raised and maybe still is raising you, we call her “Mother”. An expression that says she is always your mother, no matter how old you are. Many people think they take their mothers for granted and this mother’s day is a way to show the only woman who has, will and would stick by you through thick and thin a day of respect. Mother’s Day is a way to celebrate and honor mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March, April or May. Invented in the self-proclaimed land of the free, the United States of America. In the United States of America and the vast majority of the world it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. At ElectroShopWorld we want to honor this by offering eight items that we think are suitable and would benefit your mother this Mother’s Day as a great gift that won’t be left to gather dust in the attic. Flowers and Chocolates don’t last long and in my opinion show that you haven’t thought hard enough about the person, spending money on a present that will enhance their day-to-day routine. The reason for 8 items is that the number 8 is known for representing infinity and your mother is the person that brought into this world therefore she is part of the infinity circle of life;

1
The first gift is ideal for any expecting mothers. This Portable Fetal Doppler Heartbeat Detector “Angeltalk” uses the Doppler Effect at an extremely low power to listen to the unmistakable heartbeat of her baby.
With this gift she can also have the ability to record it via the recording cable that can be connected to a recor5ding device. “Angeltalk” is specially designed for home use and is safe and easy to use as it helps her monitor the prenatal baby`s health by detecting heartbeat rate.
A wonderful gift for all the expecting mothers to enjoy the priceless experience of hearing the prenatal baby`s first movements. From the twelfth week of the pregnancy the sounds of hiccups, kicks, blows and heartbeat can be heard as well right over earphones in the 3.5mm jack or two people at the same time since there are 2 3.5mm jacks. Also, thanks to the recording cable that is included, she will be able to record the sounds of her prenatal baby`s heartbeat and movements from the 3.5mm jack to a recording and saved to a device such as your computer, a cassette, or even your phone.

Another product that is currently in the warehouse at ElectroShopWorld is this Wireless Baby Monitor with VOX function and IR night vision, which is great for any new mother that is controlling the household and raising the young one.
For any mother with a young baby, this monitor allows you the ability to watch over your little one to know what is going on in your baby’s room and even listen and talk to your baby but without the need to physically be at his or her side.
Place the controllable monitor in your baby’s room, and she is free to do some house cleaning, work on the garden or even watch a movie because she can see her baby from the 2.4 Inch LCD monitor, as well as listen and talk to her baby. Its 9 IR night vision provides a bright night view of your baby to make sure she can keep an eye on them in low light conditions or at night. The VOX (Voice Over Exchange) feature will allow the baby monitor automatically activate only when her baby or his/her surroundings create sound and otherwise remain off. This will save her battery power and helps the monitor to last longer. She will also only see and hear her baby when there is something going on.

Not to stereotype but as with most families across the world the mother is the figure that looks after the house while father is earning the family its vital bread. Mothers are renowned for their cleaning and sometimes it can get too much for them so why not look into buying her a robotic vacuum cleaner, that’s right, it is the next step to having a house maid.
ElectroShopWorld enjoys discovering gadgets for the future and what better place to start than this robotic vacuum cleaner. This is not quite like the Jestons but if your mother are always busy with work and never seem to have the time to vacuum your mother floors regularly then this is the solution for your mother. With this robot vacuum cleaner your mother can simply click the button to clean she is out of the house. This robot vacuum cleaner will not get stuck in corners or fall down the stairs due to the built-in sensors to prevent any damage. When faced with obstacles or a surface edge it will simply turn around and continue its primary directive, which is to clean thanks to the obstacle, cliff and bumper sensors. Once this vacuum has a low battery it takes about 4 hours for a complete charge with the charging dock that accompanies the vacuum as part of the package. The robot vacuum stands up right when charging to save floor space.
Simply use this robot, which has 4 automatically changeable cleaning routes (Random, Spiral, Along the Wall, Polygonal Spiral) and let the robot do all the cleaning work. The two counter rotating brushes will sweep up all the dust, pet hair and dirt from carpets, and then it can be used on alternative surfaces such as wooden floors, marble floors and nylon flooring. The sturdy brushes dig deep into the carpet fibers to drag dirt, debris, dust and much more out of those hard to reach areas. Then the powerful vacuum sucks all that nasty accumulated dirt into the bin leaving your mother floors and carpets extra clean.

Android 4.3 Spotted and it’s not Key Lime Pie

android-logo-figur-logga
While we’re all anxiously waiting for Google to release a new version of Android during the coming Google I/O conference later this year, some new rumors have popped up about Android. Signs are pointing towards Android 5.X.X Key Lime Pie to be be new version, and while it’s safe to assume that Android 5.0 will launch at some point, it might not be during Google I/O. Other rumors suggest that KLP won’t be ready for prime time by then and information discovered by Artem Russakovskii of Android Police may just confirm that.

APAndroid4.3

With some digging, Artem found that Google is working on Android 4.3. To be specific, they are working on build JWR23B, in which the first letter points to the version of Android, and in this case, Jelly Bean. If Key Lime Pie is going to be a major revision change like it’s being suggested, Google may even need some more time to work out the kinks. Of course a lot of this is speculation. This also adds some weight though, to what Google said last year at I/O 2012 about slowing down the release of major revision to Android to help OEMs.
Anyhow, is will be interesting to see what Google is up to this time. Will Bable hit our phones soon? Who knows.
Will we get an Android 4.3 version before we see Android 5.0? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Huawei to Cut One-Third of The Sales Target

Huawei’s vice executive president Xu Zhijun, pointed out a few days ago that the international community’s security problems hindered the development of Huawei’s market of the telecommunications equipment in the United States. Due to the stagnant business development of the operators, Huawei targets its next four years sales for 10 billion dollars, which is $ 5 billion less than the last year.
According to the assessment of the market situation, the target of $ 10 billion is more realistic. It would be very good if Huawei can reach $ 10 billion by the end of 2017.
The sales of Huawei selling equipment services to other telecom equipment operators occupy almost 75% of its total revenue. And in the meantime, Huawei consumer department mainly sells smartphones and Android tablets to end-users, and it has already stood out of the booming smartphone market to directly competing with those high-end brands such as Apple or Samsung.
Huawei expects its IT equipment and services which sold to those enterprises and telecommunications companies can be able to contribute the company $ 800 million to $ 1 billion in revenue this year.
Due to security issues, the United States, Canada and Australia do not allow Huawei to sell equipment to the U.S. telecommunications. Therefore, Huawei ‘s overseas development was slightly hampered. Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee released a report that U.S. telecommunications companies cannot trade with Huawei and ZTE.

Tree Style View Of Chrome Tabs

Sidewise-Tree-Style-Tabs-main-panel
The side-docking Sidewise Tree Style Tabs is an extension that aims to take care of managing all those tabs more effectively. In a nutshell, you can give it any load of tabs you wish, and fully expect it to run those marathon browsing sessions for as long as you want.
The Chrome app comes into play as soon as you add it from Chrome’s web store. All your tabs are quickly sorted in a tree style into a sidebar on the left (though you can opt for having it on the right too). There’s a button on the top-right that opens Sidewise’s settings control in a new tab. Here, you can customize your mouse’s functions or choose from a plethora of more advanced features for your monitor and keyboard. You can import, export, or, in an emergency, restore closed tabs. Furthermore, the search bar below the buttons allows you to quickly find a tab without having to inspect the whole tree branch by branch.
Sidewise Tree Style Tabs is both lightweight and intelligent – you can simply double-click tabs you’re not using to put them in hibernate mode for saving processing resources. Doing the same again wakes them up. Right-click on any tab in the sidebar and you’ll get further options in its context menu, as shown in the screenshot above. Among other things, you can highlight a tab, move it around, label it, copy it’s URL, put it in a folder, or assort it with other tabs in a simple hierarchy. You can also select multiple tabs using ctrl or shift clicks, and drag and drop a whole group around. To add new tabs, just double-click in the sidebar’s empty region.

The HTC One to Has Its System and Ultrapixel Lens Upgraded

On April 25, the news from HTC confirmed that the international model HTC One will have a series of software and hardware updated, which means a lot of changes and improvement of the Ultrapixel lens are going to be employed soon. However, HTC’s flagship phone is to be sold by AT & T and other carriers. The international model HTC One has already been upgraded after being launched on the market for some time.

According to the HTC news, now the upgrade mainly targets for the European version while in the coming week will involve the international version as well. The major part of the upgrade this time is the camera. Therefore the newly updated phone will largely rely on Zoe features as well as other performance to make it seems more impressive.
In addition to the update of the camera, HTC also confirmed that the upgrade will improve the system performance and stability, and the speed of the system will also be significantly increased. But it will continue using the Android 4.1Jelly Bean operating system, as well as the same version of Sense UI user interface. The significant improvements contain the following aspects:

NASA launches three Nexus Ones into orbit

NASA has launched three HTC Nexus One smartphones into orbit around the Earth as low-cost satellites.
As part of a new project to lower the cost of satellites, on Sunday, NASA successfully launched three smartphones into orbit around the Earth. The three HTC Nexus One phones, running the Android OS, were carried aboard the Antares rocket, a new cargo shuttle for the International Space Station, from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, US.
PhoneSat 1.0 (credit: Nasa)

The trio of “PhoneSats” is operating in orbit, and may prove to be the lowest-cost satellites ever flown in space. The goal of NASA’s PhoneSat mission is to determine whether a consumer-grade smartphone can be used as the main flight avionics of a capable, yet very inexpensive, satellite.
“Smartphones offer a wealth of potential capabilities for flying small, low-cost, powerful satellites for atmospheric or Earth science, communications or other space-born applications. They also may open space to a whole new generation of commercial, academic and citizen-space users,” – said Michael Gazarik, NASA’s associate administrator for space technology in Washington.

New Facebook Logo Made Official

facebook-logo-comparison
You might not have noticed, but Facebook has rolled out a new main logo and refreshed the design of other icons for the first time in years. Facebook’s logo no longer includes the faint blue line at the bottom of its “F” icon. The letter is also pulled closer to the edge of the box.
Although this was first spotted on the information page for Facebook Home — the social network’s new app launcher for Android — the new logo showed up in the company’s newsroom webpage on Friday, according to web developer Tom Waddington for the site Cut Out + Keep.
The “F” logo hasn’t been updated to all pages just yet, including the Brand Permissions page. However, it has been added as the picture to Facebook’s Twitter account. Other official pages have received logo refreshes in the past few weeks, from the security badge to the privacy icon. The redesigned logos feature Facebook’s signature blue color as a background to create a more streamlined, uniformed look.

Twitter #Music App Launches for iPhone and Web

twitter-music
After testing the app with music artists and influencers, Twitter #Music will be available starting today athttps://music.twitter.com and as a separate app for the iPhone through the App Store. So what does the service do? Well, it does what you might expect from a music app from Twitter — it helps you find music that’s popular on Twitter and music based on the bands you follow. The app is centered around four pages or tabs, which you can swipe through to access.
Twitter got a little bit noisier last week. The social-slash-information network introduced Twitter #music, a music-streaming service powered by Rdio and Spotify that allows Twitter users to listen to songs that are popular among other users, discover new artists, and listen to tracks from the artists and bands they already follow. Now the question is whether Twitter just played the opening notes to its social crescendo or simply added another instrument to its informational cacophony.
Who would have thought that a service built for feature phones and limited to just 140 characters would become one of the primary contributors to the “fear of missing out” pandemic? Yet here we are, six years after Twitter’s SXSW-enabled rise to dominance, and those 140 characters have evolved into snippets of articles, songs, videos, photos — galleries, even — apps, and who-knows-what-else Twitter decides to release next. What was once easily managed has become an organizational nuisance.

Firefox OS Smartphones Go on Sale Tomorrow

firefox phones

While hardware giants such as ZTE, Alcatel, LG, Huawei and Sony have publicly committed to building and distributing phones running Mozilla’s HTML5-powered Firefox OS, the first company to actually go to marketwith Firefox OS devices (albeit only developer preview handsets for now) is a bootstrapped Spanish upstart called Geeksphone.
With a 12-person team, a 20-year-old CTO and co-founder (see my video interview with Javier Agüera below) and not a single dime in venture capital raised to date, Geeksphone will be opening its online store for customers worldwide in the very near future – as expected. In fact, The Next Web has been informed that people will be able to start placing orders for the startup’s entry-level Keon and the more powerfulPeak tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday at the very latest.
Update: aaaand the store is now live.
That will make Geeksphone first to market indeed, which might be something of a competitive advantage – provided there is indeed a market for Firefox OS devices to begin with.

Chinese Huawei Plans to Recruit 5,500 in Europe

The Chinese telecom provider Huawei plans to recruit 5500 stuff in Europe in the next five years. And in the meanwhile, its major European competitors are laying off.
Previously, France Telecom, Alcatel – Lucent announced cutting off 5,500 employees, and the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson has also stated that it will lay off 1,550 in Sweden headquarters; Nokia Siemens Networks in 2011 said that the company will close 17,000 jobs.
In this regard, the Vice Chairman of Huawei Mr Hu estimates in an interview in Paris that with some signs of recovery in the European economy, mobile operators will be likely to expect more demand for the fast communication services and cheaper equipment, so as to promote the market needs.

Touchless Tablet Interaction with Brainwave Technology

samsung-headgear

Amazing concept under development by one of the biggest companies in the world. It would be a next big step in the tablet and cellphones industry, a breakthrough we can say. Namely, Samsung is currently working with researchers at the University of Texas on a project involving EEG caps that harnesses the power of one’s mind to control tablets and smartphones, and if that weren’t enough, the company’s actually hoping to take it mainstream. Now, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s be clear: in its current stage, the system is cumbersome and aimed at those with disabilities, but Samsung’s already proven that it’s interested in alternative input methods, and this could certainly be the logical conclusion.
As is, participants are asked to wear EEG caps that measure the electrical activity along their scalp. Then, they’re able to make selections by focusing on an icon that flashes at a distinct frequency from others, which the system recognizes as a unique electrical pattern. Overall, the accuracy of the system is in the ballpark of 80 to 95 percent, and users are able to make selections on average of every five seconds. In order to make the system more approachable, the researchers hope to develop EEG hats that are more convenient and less intrusive — in other words, ones that people can wear throughout the day. We can’t promise this type of futuristic tech will come anytime soon, but for a closer peek, hit up the source link for a peek at Samsung’s next wild idea.

Android Was Supposed To Be a Camera OS

Andy Rubin, the now-departed former boss of Google’s Android division, has revealed that the OS was initially developed to power digital cameras, before the slump in snapper sales encouraged his team to turn it into a mobile phone system.
“The exact same platform, the exact same operating system we built for cameras, that became Android for cellphones,” Rubin told attendees at an economic forum in Tokyo. “We decided digital cameras wasn’t actually a big enough market. I was worried about Microsoft and I was worried about Symbian, I wasn’t worried about iPhone yet.”
Rubin showed off a presentation he put together in 2004, which showed a digital camera connecting to a computer and uploading images to a central server known as the… Android Datacenter. Once he’d switched it to a mobile OS, Android and Rubin’s team were acquired by Google in 2005.

New security measure introduced by Microsoft

microsoft
Microsoft has laid bare its plans for a single log-in with enhanced security across its suite of Xbox and Windows services, as well as other apps owned by the company. The security measures were outlined in a Microsoft blog post last night, and confirmed that a new two-step authentication process for all Microsoft accounts would be rolling out across the next “couple of days”.
With this single account Microsoft said you would be able to gain access to many of its services at once, and spooled off a few examples:
  • Communicate with your Outlook.com inbox and calendar, and with Skype video chat.
  • Entertain yourself with games from Xbox Live, Xbox Music and Xbox video.
  • Access to all your photos, videos, docs and other stuff through SkyDrive.
  • One set of people from the networks you use, like Facebook, Linked In, Twitter and more.
  • Unlock personal productivity with Office.
However, Microsoft stated that while very lovely, this single account focus requires additional security to function, and explained why it is opting for a two-step verification process. The post reads, “Two-step verification is when we ask you for two pieces of information any time you access your account — for example, your password plus a code sent to a phone or email on file as security info.
“Two-step verification protects you everywhere you use your Microsoft account; on Windows 8, any Web browser, and even Microsoft apps and services on iOS and Android devices.”
You can start the process now by visiting this security page, if you wish.

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie Rumor Roundup

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie Rumor Roundup

Android has been growing steady the past 6 years. After the original beta version of Android launched in November 2007, we’ve seen a stream of delicious sounding Android versions come by. Android Cupcake was first, followed by, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and now Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. I never knew tech could make me feel so hungry.
With every new release, a raft of new features came baked in and Android went from clunky to buttery smooth. And it won’t be different for the next release. Expect a whole batch of new features, improvements and updates. But what can we expect? And what do we know for sure already? Find out after the break.

Release of Key Lime Pie
Expectations are that Android 5.0 will be released during the Google I/O conference in San Francisco on May 15-17. It’s a pretty safe bet since last year, Android Jelly Bean was unveiled at the same conference. But another reason to assume Android 5.0 is coming in May is that leaked Qualcomm documents point out that two new Snapdragon devices rocking Android 5.0 are going to hit the market in the third quarter of 2013. And the fact that Qualcomm demanded that the leaked files be taken down seems to add to their legitimacy.
Unified Messaging
It is rumored that Google is going to launch a unified messaging app, which would be called Google Babble according to some sources. Whatever the app’s name is going to be, its aim will be to tie together instant messaging, VoIP and Video Calls. Competing directly with Black Berry Messaging and iMessage, Google Babble would be a big addition to the Android platform. This could actually be the main feature of Android 5.0.
Another interesting rumor that surfaced a couple of weeks ago could be pointing towards a unified messaging system, namely that Google is looking to acquire WhatsApp. Although denied by Whatsapp, it would be a logical step for Google since Whatsapp has over 200 million users and would make Google’s task a whole lot easy.

Performance
As always, we can expect Android Key Lime Pie to be smoother, faster and less power consuming.

Wish List
Those were all the Key Lime Pie rumors, all the rest of the Android 5.0 news seems to be more like a combination of a wish list and wild rumors. There are no solid reasons to believe in the following speculations but who knows… Wishful thinking?
These are some of the possibilities:
  • Guest/Child Mode: Set up your Android device to block access to your email, text messages or some apps to prevent nosy guests from accessing private data or changing settings.
  • Performance Profiles: Set your device to the optimal performance setting with just a click for reading, gaming or other activities. This could come in handy when you need to squeeze some last juice out of that battery.
  • New Lock Screen: More options or an updated version of the lock screen would be a well welcome option!
  • Multiple Device Sync: Start watching a movie on your phone and then continue watching it on your tablet. Live synchronization between all your Android devices would be great!

Yahoo! to Shut Down Its Mail Service in China on August 19, 2013

Frankly speaking, it’s a bit sudden. Who may have thought that Yahoo China, the old email service would leave the Chinese market by this way? Anyway, what we can do now is move our mails in accordance with the methods provided by the figure below before August 19, 2013.
Clearly, from the notification the relocation recommended mail service given by the official China Yahoo is their closely related Ali cloud. (Behind Yahoo is Alibaba.com). Of course, if people have other methods, they may turn to the POP service to complete the movement. In short, no matter which method users will choose, it’s better to get used to their “new home” as soon as possible.

Yahoo Mail China To Shut Down on August 19, 2013
Partial Translation:
“Today (April 18), China Yahoo Mail officially launched the overall migration and stop the service on August 19, 2013, and thereafter all the user’s messages and related account settings will be deleted and cannot be restored.
For people who own a Chinese Yahoo Mail, we provided the following two official options:
First: If your mailbox suffix is @ yahoo.com.cn or @ yahoo.cn, you can register and binding a new ali cloud mailbox. This mailbox will automatically save the history of mails in your Yahoo Mail, and it also accept mails that will be sent to your Yahoo Mail before December 31, 2014.
Second: You can also apply for China Yahoo Mail POP service to move your mails to Yahoo.com or any other third-party e-mail suppliers.
Before August 19, 2013, you can still normally use your original Yahoo Mails, but then if the above operation is not performed before the date, all of the original Yahoo Mail messages and related account settings will be deleted and is not able to be restored…”

My Experience With The Android 4.0 TV + PC Box “EZTV” Plus A Wireless Motion Mouse

On April 17th 2013 I decided to purchase a product I have had an interest in for a while. I have always been a fan of Android and have ventured into the Android products before with smart phones, so when I decided to buy “EZTV” Android 4.0 TV + PC Box it was very familiar. Also I wanted to enhance my Android experience and instead of buying a mouse and a keyboard, I opted to buy the wireless keyboard and motion mouse that is compatible with the Android system. Setting it up was very simple as it is basically a box with a power cable requiring power from the socket and a HDMI cable, which was included in the package that links the TV box to the TV allowing a very clear and smooth picture. Choosing the resolution for me is important as I want to get the very best I can from this TV box product, therefore choosing 1080p was always going to be my choice. The “EZTV” is easy, especially as it has Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version as its operating system. Like most Android platforms, it is completely customizable, allowing you to set the date and select languages as well customizing lay-outs and wall-paper, so if I want to stick a picture of the family cat in a pirate outfit as the background then I can. There is also a feature that someone like myself enjoys and that is the section to install a VPN as being in the Middle Kingdom, known as China, their ‘great firewall of China’ prevents high speeds and also the ability to access certain sites and applications. With the VPN, I can choose if I am in the USA or the UK or anywhere else where there is more freedom on the internet then where I am currently.
I flicked through the menus and instantly got very familiar with this product, and then I viewed some of the pre-installed applications and came across a very familiar and high addictive game, Angry Birds. I decided to have a play as I wanted to see how the box and control would react, particularly during this type of game play. A quick back ground for those who do not know what Angry Birds is, it is a game where the players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playing field. To control the slingshot on the mobile phone it requires touch screen control allowing more freedom to guide the bird to the intended target but my TV is not touch screen therefore I had to rely on the remote control.
The controller that came with the “EZTV” is good for navigating around the menus and settings in a standard left/right/up/down direction but struggles with the freedom of movement that Angry Birds allowed. Luckily for a little bit extra cash I purchased a wireless mini QWERTY keyboard that also doubles up as a motion mouse. Simply insert the USB wireless mouse reader in the TV box and the motion mouse read straight away and within seconds I was using the mouse controller to move the bird freely just like when I was using my finger on the touch screen phone. The interaction was just as good as it was on the phone but this time it was clearer to see, instead of my mobile’s 5 inch screen I had a whole 36 inch screen TV to view everything. Android is part of Google and as a result there are many pre-installed applications, which truthfully speaking are usually related to what I use on my computer such as YouTube for watching videos and Gmail to check my e-mail. Also there is Google Chrome browser, which is also my favorite web browser to use. The TV box has its own built-in 2GB hard disk, which for someone like me is more than big enough for the amount of videos, photos, and data I usually save. However because this “EZTV” TV box is very diverse, I can boost the amount of space by using either an SD card or a USB flash drive that allows an additional 8GB each, also the hard drive slots inside the TV box can support a massive 2TB, so if I ever get desperate I can quickly make a trip to the city center and purchase a bigger hard disk.
The remote that came with this product as mention before was good enough for navigation but so useful with something like Angry Birds game due to the freedom of movement. On the other hand, if you are not a gamer this shouldn’t really bother you as the control is simple and not covered in buttons. All the menu pages such as the home page, the page containing the apps and settings etc are clearly labeled as well as the volume and the left/right/up/down directional buttons.
The actually box itself is a respectable 210x150x60mm (L x W x D) size and does not take up much room, also it has an antenna on the back for connecting to the WiFi does not take up much space. The power adapter is a direct DC connection into the back of the box as well as the HDMI port that allows connecting to other HDMI compatible TVs/monitors. Also for those that don’t have WiFi, there is a RJ-45 socket in the back to connect your LAN line as well as the usual YPbPr TV audio connection. Down the side of the media box are two USB ports for plugging in your mouse, keyboard, or flash pen. The box is well design and I think is very easy and not that complicated to set-up.

I will finish with a short conclusion to announce that I believe this Android 4.0 TV box is a smashing way to bring an Android operating system into your front room that has almost the same abilities a as a regular desktop computer while saving on space. The user ability is great for transforming your TV into an Android multimedia center. I am glad with this purchase, and also due to enjoying games I also purchased the wireless mini QWERTY Keyboard and motion mouse to enhance the playability.

New Emoticons for Facebook Chat

fb emoticons-3
Sharing complicated emotions on Facebook was almost impossible until now. Here, an exclusive conversation with the features designers.
Facebook is unparalleled for sharing photos of our vacation or a child’s first steps. All of the best moments of our lives look amazing on the Timeline. So what about the worst ones? What about when we have a stomach ache, get fired from a job, lose someone we love? Should expressing those ideas look different? Could something cue your friends so they don’t hit that “like” button inappropriately?
Apparently so. Soon everyone will have access to a new feature that’s slowly unearthed itself over the last few weeks, so that when we post an update, we can select how we feel about it from 200 different feeling-emoticon combinations, or even type any emotion imaginable and pair it up with the emoji of our choosing.

Check Runtime Broker If You’re Running Out Of RAM On Windows 8

ram on windows8

Windows 8 brought with it a new class of don’t-call-them-Metro apps. A new process called Runtime Broker was created to help manage permissions within said apps. Under normal circumstances it should use only a few megabytes of data. However, in some cases, a memory leak may cause it to balloon up to a gigabyte or more.
The issue involves how the process handles live tiles. Under certain circumstances a request for an update to the tile may set aside an amount of RAM that never gets released. Over time, that allotment grows and grows until your system grinds to a halt. Jeffrey Keys, a developer of an app once afflicted by this problem, elaborates:
The bug manifests itself when calling TileUpdater.GetScheduledTileNotifications. The leak may not be obvious unless you have many tiles scheduled. In my experience it happens regardless of the number of scheduled tiles, it’s just more apparent when you have more.
The issue has been reported to Microsoft, but there’s no confirmation of a fix yet. In the meantime, if you find Runtime Broker is using a suspiciously high amount of RAM, try uninstalling any Windows 8 apps you have that utilize live tiles, one at a time. Read more What Is Runtime Broker And Why Does It Use So Much Memory?

Malware On Mobile Grew 163% In 2012, Report Says

Mobile service provider NQ Mobile today released a study of malware covering 2012, using data gathered from the company’s Security Labs. It found that malware threats in general on mobile platforms grew 163 percent in 2012, totally more than 65,000 identified distinct forms of app repackaging, malicious URLs and SMS phishing (also known as smishing). The attacks were mostly geared towards Android devices, which was the platform of choice for almost 95 percent of threats identified by NQ.
Trends indicate we’ll only see more attacks, and more creative ones, according to NQ. In February, security researchers identified a new type of malware that uses an Android device as a launch platform for infecting a target computer via USB connection, the company said. That remains limited to only a few identified infected handsets, but it’s a troubling attack vector that could pose plenty of problems down the road if it becomes more sophisticated. In a release, NQ Mobile co-CEO Omar Khans said that what’s needed is a system that can detect threats in advance of infection and prevent them, something which so far hasn’t really been widely available.
NQ’s data indicates that Android is a big risk for malware, but iOS has also recently come under fire for free apps that leak more personal data than on other platforms. Overall, mobile security is likely to be a growing concern, and one that could potentially become more complicated as the pace of improvements to mobile tech increases and our usage of those devices grows higher still. For now, common sense is probably the best defense against security threats, but a more unified Android platform would help to limit malware problems as well as significantly improve developers’ lives.

Turn a Printed Page Into a Touchscreen With This Brilliant Concept

Realizing that the oft-promised ‘paperless office’ may never actually come to fruition, researchers at Fujitsu are working on a backup plan that gives printed documents similar tablet-like touchscreen functionality.

Using a tabletop projector, webcam, and other sensors, the system can precisely detect finger movements and motion in 3D, allowing a user to interact with a printed page and digitize text or pictures by simply tapping or dragging out selection boxes. The projector creates UI elements that are perfectly matched to a user’s finger motions, but it can also facilitate additional content like animations or videos on the page. One thing’s for certain, staying up all night to cram for a college final would be a heck of a lot easier with an enhanced textbook.
