Top 5 Android Apps for This Week

android apps featured
A lot happened in the world of Android this week and, as it has been since the launch of Android Kitkat and the Nexus 5, most of it has been Google. To start, there is a new Google Play Store layout that will let you search for apps based on whether or not they’ve been designed for a tablet or a phone. The Xbox One launched this last week and so did the accompanying Smartglass app. Google Wallet was updated and it brought tap-to-pay functionality to all Android Kitkat devices. Google also combined the Currents and Magazine app into an interesting mash-up called Google Newsstand, which which guys from Android Authority reviewed. Lastly, Pocket 5.0 was released and they reviewed that one as well.

Google Now-Inspired New Tab Page For Chrome

Chrome’s default New Tab page isn’t all that popular due to its rather limited set of options. A Google Search bar, and a few recently visited websites is all you find when you fire up Chrome. Fortunately, there are a lot of third-party extensions in the Chrome Web Store that let you customize it with ease. Website addictivetips.com covered a bunch of great New Tab page Chrome extensions in the past, StartHQ, Momentum and iOS 7 Home being a few notable ones among them. In case you are looking for yet another option, try iChrome. This feature-packed extension transforms the New Tab page into a clean grid of information inspired from Google Now.

iChrome
In contrast to what its name may have you think, iChrome doesn’t take inspiration from any iOS feature. Instead, it goes for bringing a Google Now-like card-based UI to Chrome’s New Tab Page, arranged in grid in order to keep the most useful bits of information and tools always accessible to you. The available components include a Google search bar, weather card, shortcuts for Google services like Chrome Web Store, Search, YouTube, Google Drive, Gmail and Google Docs, WolframAlpha, as well as a News feed. The background theme is customizable, and the extension comes packaged with a bunch of themes out the box.
When it comes to the Search bar, you get a Mic. button for voice commands so you may talk to your computer in a manner similar to Google Now on mobile. iChrome also keeps a list of your most recently visited websites for quick access later.
Some of the widgets are also customizable; all you need to do is click the minuscule gear button that pops up upon hovering the cursor over a widget, after which any pertaining configuration settings are revealed. For instance, the News widget displays news stories from Google News by default, but you can personalize it with any custom website or news service of your choice by specifying a custom RSS feed link.

Cross-Platform Password Vault With WiFi Sync & Cloud Backup

keeper
Keeper is application that is quite feature-rich. Sporting a really great design, it protects your login information in an encrypted database, and sync it across Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS and Android.

Keeper-Page
The download page of Keeper lets you grab your desired version, be it a desktop client, browser extension or smartphone app. You will need to visit Keeper in your mobile browser to download the iOS or Android apps, though. I tested the Windows client of Keeper, and it worked pretty great. It lets you store data to an encrypted vault on your local storage, and you can also save to the cloud for backup or synchronization with other devices. To get started, download the app to your desired platform. It will ask you to specify a master password, after which you can create a new profile by entering your email address, followed by a name for the current device.
The interface of the Windows app is quite simple, but this simplicity is also what makes it easier to use. It allows you to create specific folders for different kinds of passwords. For instance, you may create a Bank folder and store all information pertaining to your bank account into it. Likewise, you can create an Email folder for saving passwords for your email accounts across different services. When creating a folder, simply specify the title, login, password and URL associated with the information you want to store. You can also enter a mini description for it, as well as add additional custom fields of your choice.
The mobile version is also equipped with equally great features, and you will find all the options required for saving your login information. I’d also say that the mobile version looks pretty great, in fact better than its Windows counterpart.

Motorola’s Project Ara Looks to Create Modular Smartphones

Motorola has unveiled Project Ara, an open-source initiative for modular smartphones with the goal to “do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software.” The company plans to create an ecosystem that can support third-party hardware development for individual phone components — in other words, you could upgrade your phone’s processor, display, and more by shopping at different vendors.
phoneblocks

Motorola will be working with Phonebloks, which recently showed off a similarly ambitious concept for modular smartphones; the Google-owned hardware manufacturer says that it plans to engage with the Phonebloks community throughout the development process and help realize the same idea with its technical expertise.

Make a Computer Monitor That Only You Can See

Here’s the ultimate example of someone who values his privacy for watching…um…videos on his PC. YouTube user brusspup shows how to make a DIY monitor that only you can see through special glasses.
What you will need is a standard LCD monitor, a sheet of polarizing filter, 3D glasses and some craft tools. Open up the monitor and strip out the polarizing filter on the screen. This process requires a little care not to damage your screen while you’re at it.
Then, pop out the 3D filters from your glasses and trace the size of your spectacles onto the polarizing filter. Cut it and fix the polarizing filters into your glasses.

There you go! Your monitor will now show a white screen to anyone, unless you look at it through the special glasses you just created.

MediaTek unveils world’s first true octa-core mobile platform

On Wednesday, MediaTek launched its “octa-core” chip, the MT6592, claiming it to be the first of its kind that can use all eight processors simultaneously. Designed to be both powerful and energy efficient, the chip has a clock speed of 2 GHz and is built with ARM’s Cortex-A7 processor cores. The first products to use the chip will arrive at the end of this year or early next quarter.
mediatek-chip-2
MediaTek isn’t widely known in the U.S., but it’s become the largest vendor for smartphone chips in China, according to research firm Gartner. MediaTek said it wanted to break into the market for high-end products, including tablets, with its new eight-core processor.
“For many Chinese vendors it’s very difficult to compete with Samsung and Apple at that price level,” he said. “So they price their phones lower, giving them an additional sales point to attract customers.” Putting an eight-core chip on a smartphone or tablet gives Chinese vendors another sales point to use in their product marketing, Sheng added.

CryptoLocker Ransomware Spreading

Just last month, antivirus companies discovered a new ransomware known as Cryptolocker. This ransomware is particularly nasty because infected users are in danger of losing their personal files forever. Spread through email attachments, this ransomware has been seen targeting companies through phishing attacks. Cryptolocker will encrypt users’ files using asymmetric encryption, which requires both a public and private key. The public key is used to encrypt and verify data, while private key is used for decryption, each the inverse of the other.
Below is an image from Microsoft depicting the process of asymmetric encryption.
assemcrypto

It’s infecting more than 10,000 victims on a weekly basis. This was the conclusion of security vendor Bitdefender, which conducted research on Crytolocker between October 27 and November 1.
The bad news is decryption is impossible unless a user has the private key stored on the cybercriminals’ server. Currently, infected users are instructed to pay $300 USD to receive this private key. Infected users also have a time limit to send the payment. If this time elapses, the private key is destroyed, and your files may be lost forever.
Files targeted are those commonly found on most PCs today; a list of file extensions for targeted files include:
3fr, accdb, ai, arw, bay, cdr, cer, cr2, crt, crw, dbf, dcr, der, dng, doc, docm, docx, dwg, dxf, dxg, eps, erf, indd, jpe, jpg, kdc, mdb, mdf, mef, mrw, nef, nrw, odb, odm, odp, ods, odt, orf, p12, p7b, p7c, pdd, pef, pem, pfx, ppt, pptm, pptx, psd, pst, ptx, r3d, raf, raw, rtf, rw2, rwl, srf, srw, wb2, wpd, wps, xlk, xls, xlsb, xlsm, xlsx

A few things you can do to prevent your PC from getting infected with the CryptoLocker virus:
  • Most viruses are introduced by opening infected attachments or clicking on links to malware usually contained in spam emails. Avoid opening emails and attachments from unknown sources, especially zip or rar archive files.
  • Using antivirus software is strongly recommended. Ensure the antivirus real time protection is active and virus database is up-to-date. Also keep your operating system and software up-to-date.
  • Keep a backup. If you have a real-time backup software then make sure that you first clean the computer and then restore the unencrypted version of the files.
  • Create files in the Cloud and upload photos to online accounts like Flickr or Picasa.
  • Windows 7 users should set up the System Restore points or, if you are using Windows 8, configure it to keep the file history.
  • If Crypto locker already infected your machine, make sure you have reformatted your hard drive to completely remove the CryptoLocker trojan before you attempt to re-install Windows and/or restore your files from a backup.
It’s all well and good to prepare, but what if you already are infected? Despite the virus’s warning not to “disconnect from the Internet or turn off the computer,” this is exactly the first order of damage control.
You’ve got to realize these guys are criminals and they lie. The only thing turning off your computer does is keep the virus from continuing to infect.
In fact, unplugging your computer may save some of your files, if the virus is still in the process of infecting them.
Next, you need to figure out what damage has been done. Which files have you lost? Do you have backups of these files? If you don’t have backups, have you checked Windows’ System Restore files, which sometimes automatically back up the computer for you?
You should not pay these guys ransom. It’s just going to encourage malware authors to create similar viruses…. However reportedly paying ransom works. As a last resort it may help you out.

OS X: Finder Tips and Tricks

Finder isn’t the most exciting thing about OS X, but it’s the backbone for how you navigate the operating system. It’s your file browser, your search engine, and your management area, but few of us really dig into everything it can do. With that in mind, here are a few tips and tricks for getting a bit more out of Finder.

finder

Change Folder Icons

Folders are boring looking, and having a bunch of them in a row means it’s hard to tell what you’re looking for at a glance. Thankfully, it’s dead simple to just change the look of any folder:
  1. Select the folder whose icon you want to change and press Cmd+I to open that folder’s info panel.
  2. Open the image you want to use for the folder’s icon in Preview. Press Cmd+A (to select it) and then Cmd+C (to copy it).
  3. Back in the info panel, click on the icon in the top left corner and press Cmd+v to paste your customized icon image.
That works for folders, apps, or other icons, so you can customize icons to your heart’s content.

Manage All Your Tags in One Place

Tags are a great new feature in OS X Mavericks, but it’s not exactly transparent how you can use them. While it’s simple enough to tag any item you save at the time, or to even add a tag to older files with a right-click, managing them is hidden away. Click on Finder > Preferences, and then select “Tags.” Here you can edit tags, create favorites, and reorganize them in the Sidebar. If you want to delete any of your tags, just right-click the tag and select “Delete.”

Master Using Tabs

Tabs are a great new Finder feature in Mavericks. When you’re in Finder, just hit Command+T to open up a new tab, just like you would in a web browser. From there, you can bounce between open tabs with the keyboard shortcut Control+Tab. You can also merge all your open Finder windows into one tabbed window by going to Window > Merge All Windows.

Enable Text Selection in Quick Look

Quick Look (hit the Spacebar when you select a file) is a great way to quickly peek at a file without actually opening it up. The problem is that you can’t select the text of the file in Quick Look if you want to copy something. Thankfully, it’s super easy to enable this feature with a Terminal command. Open up Terminal (Applications > Utilities), and type this in:
defaults write com.apple.finder QLEnableTextSelection -bool TRUE; killall Finder
Now you can select (and copy) text from Quick Look and never have to open a MS Word file again.

Arrange Files Anyway You Want

You have a ton of different ways to sort and browse your files in Finder, but they’re not all transparent on the surface. By default, you get columns for Name, Date Modified, Size, and Kind, and you can sort your files by clicking any of those columns. You can also add more columns to get more options for sorting by clicking Finder > View > Show View Options when you’re in a folder. Here you can add more options for sorting. Likewise, you can skip sorting all together and arrange your files for a completely different view. Hit View > Arrange By, and select the method you want. Your files will get bunched together based on certain criteria.

Group Selected Files into a Folder

Need to throw a bunch of files into a new folder quickly? Just select all the files, right-click the list, and select “New Folder with Selection.” Finder will create a new folder with all those files already dumped inside of it.

Show the Library Folder All the Time

In older versions of OS X, Apple consistently hid the Library folder from people. This is fine for anyone not tinkering around with their system, but it was always a pain to enable the folder if you liked having it easily accessible. Now in Mavericks, it’s easy to show that folder all the time: just navigate to the home folder, hit Command+J, and check the box marked “Show Library Folder.”

Always Show File Extensions

OS X doesn’t show files names by default, and in certain views that can be incredibly annoying. To enable this feature so you know the difference between your JPGs and your TIFs, head into Finder > Preferences, select the Advanced tab, and check the box labeled “Show all filename extensions.”

Customize the Toolbar

The toolbar in Finder provides buttons with access to all kinds of features, from sorting options to tag settings. Not everyone needs everything though, and if you haven’t bothered, it’s worth customizing that toolbar so it’s only items you actually need. Just hit View > Customize Toolbar, and you can move buttons around or customize what’s available. You can also drag items to the toolbar so they’re always there—that includes files, folders, and apps. In Mavericks, select the file you want, and Command+Click and drag it to the toolbar. On older versions of OS X, just click and drag the file (or app) you want to the search box in Finder.

Set Up a Default Folder

By default, Finder usually shows “All My Files” as the default folder every time you open it up. For most of us, that’s not really that useful. If you’d prefer to change it to something you access on a daily basis, head into Finder > Preferences and change the setting under “New Finder windows show” on the General tab.

Use Smart Folders

Smart Folders are one of those often under-utilized tricks built into OS X that people often forget about. Basically, a smart folder is an always-updating folder that shows you saved searches based on parameters you choose. This means you can have a folder that automatically shows you new JPGs on your computer, files larger than a certain size, or just about anything else you’d want. To create a new smart folder, just head into Finder and hit File > New Smart Folder. You’ll now see a Finder window with a (+) sign where you can add criteria. Type in the criteria you’d like, and then you can save that folder so you can always access it. You can also set it up so it searches your entire hard drive, or just specific folders.
So, with a smart folder, you can create all kinds of customized folders, from application specific folders to a folder that automatically updates with your photo stream.

Drawboard PDF – Modern UI PDF Editor and Annotation App

What makes this app different from others I’ve seen in this genre is its user-friendly layout. Moreover, I had yet to see a fully-featured PDF editor for the RT platform, so this made it even more interesting. Drawboard’s purpose is to allow you edit all your PDF documents using Windows 8’s touch-enabled UI. It supports a radial menu that contains an extensive array of tools designed to let you add custom shapes, text and other tidbits to your PDF document and save it as a new file. The app supports both stylus and finger touch gestures.

Drawboard-PDF
Upon launch, you’re introduced to a really nice looking landing screen that carries navigation buttons labeled Browse, New and Getting Started. This main screen also lets you view your recently opened PDF files, though that section is empty on first launch, of course. Getting started with Drawboard PDF is easier than you think. You can either start with a new blank document from scratch, or continue working with one of your existing PDF. The app also allows you to snap a new photo and make a PDF out of it custom annotation. Assuming you choose a new blank document, Drawboard will let you choose its page size, orientation and total page count before you begin.
Besides being a useful PDF annotator, Drawboard is a nifty PDF viewer as well, meaning you can use it as a regular Modern UI PDF reader if that’s what you need. It displays current and total page count to the left. You can also zoom in and out of the document using the pertaining + and – buttons snapped to the left. The Radial menu I mentioned earlier can be activated via tapping or clicking a small hexagonal button at the top right.

Hardy GPS Devices: 6 Great GPS Watches You Have To Check Out

Wearable GPS devices are always a good idea when you are out engaged in outdoor activities or need to be as focused as possible on the task you are attending to. Truckers, pilots, hikers, cyclists – all these folks and more will benefit from being able to quickly glance down at your GPS-enabled devices without the need for Internet access.
So what types of satellite tracking watches will work best for your needs? Here’s a quick selection of the better ones out on the market:
GPS watch
ElectroShopWorld GPS Cell Phone Watch
Not all of the greatest wrist-worn GPS tracking devices out there. This is a workable GPS watch phone that will pinpoint your coordinates when a separate cell phone sends an SMS to it – allowing you and your loved ones to pinpoint your exact coordinates on free mapping services like Google Maps. Best of all, you can store up to three numbers and call them in case you find yourself in trouble.
Garmin D2 Watch
The Garmin D2 is one of those GPS devices designed specifically for airplane pilots. You can customize the interface to place waypoints along your flight plan and can even be set up to create an ETA based on the speed you are traveling. The watch itself comes with a regular compass as well as a barometer and altimeter to boot – making it one of the better GPS trackers out there for pilots.
Suunto Ambit2
The Suunto Ambit2 is not only a competent line of GPS devices but is also robust enough to work with various sports-oriented apps out there. It can keep track of useful stats for various sports, like cadence for cycling and interval speeds for swimming. It also provides a lot of useful data for hikers as well, from routes and coordinates to a three-dimensional compass and a feature that will automatically guide you back to your starting point.
GolfBuddy WT3 GPS Watch
Now this is the golfer’s GPS watch of choice. It comes with around 36,000 golf courses pre-loaded in its memory – a boggling number that allows it to pinpoint exactly where you are on any given golf course. You can then take a top-down view of your position, which does wonders for letting a golfer get an immediate feel for the hazards as well as the location of the holes on a course.
Nike Sportwatch+ GPS
The Nike Sportwatch+ was designed for the runner, with its GPS devices letting you know where you are as well as providing a plethora of other useful stats for running. These include trackers to measure your pace, timers to gauge your performance, pedometers to check the distance traveled, interval tools to automatically note down your laps and even a calorimeter that estimates the calories you’ve burned.
Adidas miCoach SMART RUN
Adidas’ miCoach SMART RUN has all the features previously mentioned for Nike’s Sportwatch+, but the former has an edge over the latter: audio coaching and Bluetooth capacity. The miCoach is basically a device that is not just for GPS navigation and stat-tracking but also as a media player of sorts. It’ll be able to play music while shooting off verbal coaching tips as you focus on your activity. These features are also why the miCoach will cost a lot compared to the other devices on this list.

Beginning in January, the Windows version of Chrome will no longer be able to add extensions from any site other than Google’s own Chrome Web Store. In fact, for the most part it will even refuse to install them from the local drive. The Chocolate Factory has been slowly buttoning down its Chrome extension policies for the last few years. Initially, extensions could be installed from anywhere on the web, just by pointing the browser at the right URL. But beginning with Chrome 21 in 2012, Google established a policy that only URLs pointing to the Chrome Web Store are valid for extension installs.
CHROME-EXTENSIONS
According to a blog post by Chrome engineering director Erik Kay, that’s because too many extension writers have been figuring out ways to evade Chrome’s security measures and silently install adware or other malicious code into unsuspecting users’ browsers – something Kay says is a leading cause of complaints from Chrome users on Windows.
“Since these malicious extensions are not hosted on the Chrome Web Store, it’s difficult to limit the damage they can cause to our users,” Kay explains. So, no more. Beginning with what will probably be Chrome 33 (Google doesn’t set fixed dates for Chrome releases, so it’s hard to be sure of the version number), extension developers will need to host their wares in the Chrome Web Store, whether the extensions are intended for a wide audience or just a few users.
That doesn’t mean they have to charge for their extensions, or even let the general public know they exist. ”There will be no impact to your users, who will still be able to use your extension as if nothing changed,” Kay explains. “You could keep the extensions hidden from the Web Store listings if you like.”
For those developers who really, really want to use their own websites as the primary source to download their extensions, Google offers a feature called Inline Installation that allows outside sites to make it seem as if extensions are being installed from their own pages, even though the actual extension files are hosted by the Chrome Web Store. This will still be supported after the policy change.

Netflix + YouTube Consume Half of Internet Traffic

Netflix and YouTube dominate over half of downstream Internet traffic in North America, according to a new report released by Canadian Internet monitoring firm Sandvine.
Downstream traffic is data that goes from a source to a computer, and Netflix’s share of that is 31.6%. YouTube comes in second at about 18.7%, up 9% from the first half of this year. Sandvine’s report also said that Hulu and Amazon, despite big efforts to catch up to Netflix in video delivery. It is possible that Hulu, or Amazon, or any of the providers that lag far behind Netflix, are much more efficient at delivering Web video signals, and that somehow Sandvine’s numbers drastically underrepresent their real usage numbers. Could be, on the other hand, these numbers have been pretty consistent for awhile.
Sandvine-2h-2013
The increased dominance of streaming services has also lessened the impact of peer-to-peer traffic and video piracy. BitTorrent accounts for around 4% of North American downstream Internet traffic, compared with 31% five years ago.
The mobile numbers from Sandvine’s report tell a bit of a different story. YouTube controls the largest portion of data, at nearly 17.7%. Facebook follows in a close second, about 2% behind.

Which Browser to Use on Android?

Smartphones have become much more than just communication devices, and it’s years since they’ve been viewed just as that. In addition to playing the role of a capable media player, portable gaming device and personal information manager, your smartphone is probably your choice for all sorts of casual web browsing as well. In fact, when late Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone back in 2007, he touted internet browsing as one of the primary features of the new device.

android-browsers

In this arena, Android holds a distinctive advantage over iOS, owing to its open-source nature and larger variety of capable choices when it comes to picking your preferred web browser. Google Play Store is riddled with these, making the choice a tough one, so we decided to put together a list of some of our favorite web browsers for Android, along with the good and bad for each of them.

Motorola Wants to Patent a Neck Tattoo That’s Also a Microphone

Do you ever get tired of holding your phone to your face? How about trying to chat in loud, crowded places?
No need to fuss. Motorola’s got you covered with its latest patent application: a smartphone microphone that’s tattooed onto your neck. Just think, you could have a little piece of Google embedded right into your body.
motorola-tattoo
According to the patent application, said neck tattoo would pick up sound by reading the “fluctuations of muscle or tissue in the throat” and sending it to a smartphone or other device wirelessly. It’ll be equipped with Bluetooth and NFC technology and “may or may not be rechargeable.” The application is a little bit cagey about whether this “electronic skin tattoo” is permanent or something you can just stick on. Either way, what a fun and subtle way to become a cyborg.

Confessions Of An Interior Designer: How I Came To Rely On Computer Projectors

I was never really good at working with 3D software, but computer projectors helped ease me into the process. They have become less a mysterious Pandora’s box and more like wrist watches that you come to subconsciously rely on. Here’s my take on how I was able to integrate mobile mini computer projectors into my design plans:
computer projector
The Problem
One of the biggest problems I had was properly pinning the images I have in my mind with the interior I am working with. I have all these design ideas floating in my head but I needed a tool to help me better visualize what effect these designs would have. I tried snapping photos and making paper cutouts, but the process was too slow and time-consuming. Clients needed to see what I had in mind as soon as possible, and I could not afford to luxuriously take my time with cutouts from digital camera photos.
A friend recommended I try using a projector for computers, but I was hesitant because of my prior experience with 3D design software. The programs I experimented with were clunky, extremely technical and were suited more for architects and engineers than interior decorators.
But I eventually relented and he brought a few whiteboard computer projectors I could try out.
Computer Projectors
The hardware itself impressed me. He explained it was an LCD projector that simulated a whiteboard – that I could use the accompanying infrared pen to interact with the projected image. He said there were DLP projectors out there but they were a bit costlier and more suited to videos than static pictures.
After he was done showing me the projector itself, he set the projector up in my office and projected a map of this one room he was working on. I saw the usual images of a top-down floor plan – measurements, walls, windows, doors, fixtures and the like. What surprised me was how easily he was able to manipulate all these items using the infrared pen he had with him.
I immediately saw how valuable these whiteboard computer projectors could be for my work.
Advantages
The first and most obvious advantage was that I could use the tool to share how an interior space would look like in my mind. This would be valuable for my colleagues as it would significantly speed up briefings while cutting down on potential misunderstandings. This setup would also allow me to better communicate to clients how their interiors would look like while simultaneously impressing them with the projected display.
The second advantage was how quickly and painlessly it would be to modify the floor plan being displayed by a simple home projector with whiteboard capabilities. I didn’t need to fiddle around with complex formulas or tables or commands just to get things to work. All I needed to do was poke and prod with the infrared pen and the computer projectors would recognize my gestures as commands.
Results
I now have my own set of computer projectors in my office along with multiple infrared pens that serve as backups and tools for me, colleagues and clients to swap ideas in real time. I even bring along a miniature projector with Internet access capabilities with me. I can create these smaller projections and synch them up with both an infrared pen and an online storage site to showcase to work more easily with new clients.
So that’s how I have come to rely on these computer projectors for my projects. How about you – think these projectors can help you out in your line of work?

Desktop Vs. Portable: Which Computer Projector Is Better?

There are many different kinds of computer projectors out there, but the most visible difference you can find there is size. You have portable variants, from mini computer projectors that are designed to be carried around in your briefcases to pico projectors that will fit in your pocket. Then you have desktop variants that vary in strength and size but are all designed to sit primarily in one spot and to be rarely moved around.
mini projector
So the question now is which variant of computer projectors will best suit your needs: desktop or portable?
Portability: The First Factor
Desktop and portable computer projectors are differentiated primarily by their weight and size. Projectors that weigh less than five pounds or more than eleven kilograms are designated as portable, while projectors that weigh more than the aforementioned values fit into the desktop category. Portable projectors are also designed to be compact enough to fit into a briefcase or some smaller container – less than 10 inches wide and less than 4 inches thick.
You then have the very first factor to consider when choosing between portable and desktop computer projectors. A bulkier office or home projector comes highly recommended if you plan to keep the projector locked in place for prolonged periods of time, while a portable projector becomes much more attractive if you plan to travel around while conducting seminars or presentations.
This is, however, not the only factor to take into consideration.
Lumens: The Defining Factor
Desktop projectors tend to be more powerful than their portable counterparts, with your average computer projectors being able to churn out higher lumen levels. This makes desktop variants much more reliable when presenting images or videos to a large audience in a wide room with elevated levels of ambient light. Even if you travel a lot, you may need to lug along a heavier desktop projector for computers if you plan to present to upwards of a hundred people in a large auditorium.
If, however, you plan to use the projector for personal use or to present to a handful of people at a time, then your typical portable projector can provide all the functionality you will ever need. These mobile projectors can get the job done even if you plan to mount it in your living room wall or simply to expand the display of your smartphone to make it more visible for friends or family coming over to visit.
Budget: The Ultimate Factor
Cost is the final factor that will determine whether you will want to get desktop or portable projectors. There are high-end computer projectors that are light and portable but still pack a whopping 3,000-plus lumen rating. If this is the type of projector you are looking for, then be prepared to pay a few thousand dollars for the device.
If your budget is limited, then you need to choose between being able to carry your projector around with you or being able to project a clear image that will be visible across relatively large distances and in relatively well-lit conditions. You can’t have both at the same time if the financial resources you set aside for your computer projectors are not unlimited. You also can’t be picky with other side-features if you are running on a budget, like a projector that comes with a built-in modem for Internet access.

Robot-Paper-Scissors?

The Japanese have done it again when it comes to making so-called ‘intelligent’ robots and this new one is a real winner at the game ‘rock-paper-scissors’. Given the name “Janken”, which is the Japanese name for the game that this robot plays, it’s creators have designed it that it will always win. When we do say win we mean it in a lose way because actually the robot can read the hand shape of the opponent and using its program to react at such a rapid speed that it seems almost simultaneously as the human opponent.

The Japanese scientists that made this version had the aim of making it faster than the version that was shown at the University of Tokyo in June 2012. The Janken robot relies on hand recognition to counter and end up always winning, or cheating as you may want to claim. This type of technology shows that the speed these robots can operate at now is almost mirroring our actions at the same time when in fact it has already read our reaction and responded accordingly and thought about how to do it in a millionth second that even out brain has not even able to register. Could Terminator actually happen?

Answering The Call Of Duty

One of this year’s most anticipated games has finally been release in the UK. Punters braved the elements and queued up to get a copy of “Call of Duty: Ghosts”, the tenth title in the Call of Duty series. People queued throughout the night just so they can get their hands on this game and they were not disappointed as “Call of Duty: Ghosts” is a beautifully designed game that also has great game play where you can play as a dog, yes a dog, as well as a cool storyline. The storyline is basically a super power emerges in South American who annexes Central America and the Caribbean before hacking some satellite space war machine and flattening a few cities in the USA.

“Call of Duty: Ghosts” has had competition to tackle and did not do too well when compared to the success of “Grand Theft Auto: V”, which was released in September. Also Battlefield 4 is also out, which is a direct rival of Call of Duty as they are both use the same style of game play as well as a war theme storyline. From looking at the videos and images, “Call of Duty: Ghosts” looks like one Hell of a title that will surely cause many break ups in relationships especially when they become hooked on the multi-player.

GPS Devices: How To Install Them On Your Bike Or Car

GPS devices are great for helping you recover your vehicle should you lose track of it. You will have a much easier time finding it in an unfamiliar parking lot, and the police would have a serious advantage should it get stolen.
GPS devices
The actual process of installing the said GPS tracker on a vehicle, however, is a different thing altogether.
Now before anything else is said and done, it is highly recommended that you bring your car or bike to an auto shop that is capable of installing electronic devices. These folks know how to hook a lot of stuff up to your vehicle without messing around with the core wires.
If you are confident enough in your DIY skills, then here is a quick set of steps to help you install GPS devices on your car or bike:
Prepare The Right Tools
Prepare these beforehand:
1. GPS navigation kit
2. Digital Multi Meter
3. Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
4. Ratchet set
5. Handheld drill
6. Wire stripper, crimper and cutter
7. Solder and soldering iron
8. Tapping screws and ring terminals
9. Electrical tape
Study The Wiring Diagram Of Your Vehicle
You can find the wiring diagram on your owner’s manual. If you no longer possess the manual, you need only identify take note of the vehicle’s model and go to your dealer. You can also use search engines like Google or Bing to find a digital copy of the wiring diagram. Why the bother? This diagram will tell you what wires you can use to power your auto GPS system without killing your car or bike.
Check The Wiring
Use the wiring diagram as a reference point from here on out. Remove the wire panels on your car or bike with your tools and test each wire with a multimeter to see if it’s live or not. Wrap the wires with electrical tape at regular intervals to prevent the wires from getting all mixed up.
Mount The Tracker On An Inconspicuous Spot
GPS devices should be mounted on the more overlooked parts of the bike. If you are mounting GPS devices on a bike, just under the metal body of the bike or inside the handlebars are great hiding spots. A car has a lot of hiding places, like inside the driver’s seat or right under the chassis of the car. The important thing to remember is that the auto GPS tracker itself should not easily be spotted by a casual once-over of the car.
Wire The Relays
This is the part where you solder and tape up the connections. Make sure that no wire is left exposed otherwise you could end up shorting the electrical systems of your vehicle. Carefully reorganize all the wires once the wiring is completed, close up the wiring panel and test vehicle GPS system to see if it works.
The process will vary depending on the specific build of your car or bike, but this basic guide should be enough to help you install GPS devices on cars and bikes alike. Remember that there is no shame in asking a professional for help – even if it is just advice on how to install an on-board GPS tracker!

All Skype third-party Apps Will Stop Working in December

Skype will no longer support third-party desktop application development beginning in December, the company has announced. This includes all recording, broadcasting, and other kinds of apps, but it also includes third-party hardware such as headphones with on-board call controls. Skype is offering no exceptions to the rule, as far as SlashGear can tell, and its official replacement offerings are slim to none.

Skype_Logo

The main reason for Skype’s putting the kibosh on third-party desktop participation after almost a decade is that it is pushing to unify its app functions across all device types. Smartphones and tablets, for example, don’t support Skype third-party apps. As such, Skype is only following the industry trend towards mobile. A corollary of the first reason for this streamlining measure is that third-party apps weigh down the Skype application. The company wants to ensure consistently speedy load and run times between users and between device types. Third-party apps throw the Skype ecosystem into relative chaos. No new apps may be developed or downloaded.
“We’ve been working hard to develop new technologies and make improvements that will benefit Skype users across all platforms, especially on mobile devices,” Skype wrote on its support pages. These changes will significantly improve the call quality and speed of delivery of instant messages, while retaining excellent battery life of mobile devices.”
The company clarified its stance on hardware as well, and gave Skype broadcasters merely lukewarm hope for a replacement app anytime in the near future.
