Download Wikipedia or Wikileaks For Reading Offline

Wikipedia is the world’s most popular and up to date encyclopedia. It is like an external brain of sorts that we can access anytime to gain knowledge about hundreds of thousands of topics, but only as long as we have internet access. That really doesn’t have to be the case though, since you can use Kiwix to download and read the entirety of Wikipedia completely offline.

dl wikipedia

The program is available as a portable application, but can also be installed the traditional way. When you launch it for the first time, it asks you to download the catalogue of available wikis, which you definitely must download. Once the catalog is ready, you can click on File > Browse library to see the list of available wikis you can download for reading offline. For purposes of testing, we downloaded Wikipedia in Simple English (730MB). If you want the more popular version – Wikipedia in English – you can download the sum total of it as updated till March 23rd, 2012 in the form of a 9.3GB download. You won’t find much information on latest topics like the Xbox One or the Royal Baby, obviously, but that won’t be an issue for most people.
download
You can quickly search for new wikis to download from the Library view, download and ‘install’ in one click, add notes, bookmark pages, export pages in PDF or HTML, and read multiple Wikipedia pages with tabination. For advanced users, it can also be set up as a web server allowing people on your network to access Kiwix from the local server without downloading huge files. It works really well, and is completely free.

Feedly Client For Windows 8

Readiy is a new Windows Store app that successfully brings the power of Feedly to Windows 8 and Windows RT while being loyal to the platform’s Modern UI. The app syncs with Feedly, meaning you don’t need to maintain yet another feeds list. Since Feedly launched its own cloud early in July, it means you can directly sign in with the service. To begin, launch the app and let Readiy connect to Feedly by clicking ‘Sign Up with Google’ or ‘Sign in’.

feedly for windows 8
The tile-based design of the app is very intuitive, making it easier to navigate on RT and Windows 8 slabs. It’s exceedingly simple and lets you handle your feeds with ease. The home screen displays all the items from your currently subscribed feeds. To reveal further content, just swipe horizontally. You can also hit ‘All Items’ on the top and then select your desired RSS subscription from the menu that appears.
The dropdown menu displays titles of your current RSS subscriptions accompanied by the number of unread items in each. Readiy also keeps your custom folder structure from Feedly intact. The dropdown menu next to your subscriptions lets you sort the view between oldest or newest first and also mark all the items as read in one go.
The app bar gives you a few more options to play with, such as letting you Pin any feed to your Start Screen, filter your feeds, mark all feeds as read, and manually sync with Feedly servers. The only shortcoming with Readiy is that it doesn’t give you any option to add new RSS subscriptions, meaning you’ll have to do that from Feedly’s own web interface or its dedicated apps for other platforms. Apart from that, it’s a solid Feedly client for Windows 8.

Windows 8 App Launcher

Program launchers are the best way to keep your desktop shortcuts manageable, and provide a more efficient solution for running applications rather than having your desktop cluttered with icons. The approach adopted by these programs varies for each, with some being like the OS X dock, while others working via system tray icons, launcher rings at the center of your desktop, hot corners and what not.

8stack
Developed by deviantART member LangLe, 8Stack is another application launcher designed to work with Windows 8 by taking advantage of the operating system’s Modern UI. It displays a vertical sidebar on the right side of the screen, from where you can easily launch your applications. While it’s not a perfect solution for launching each and every file or program, the app does provide quick access to popular programs, eliminating the need to enter the Start Screen in order to find and launch them. 8Stack doesn’t require any sort of installation and works out of the box. After downloading it via the link provided at the end of this post, just extract the contents of the ZIP archive to an easily accessible location. You can then create a shortcut to the program’s EXE file on your desktop for quick access.
However, It’s worth noting here that 8Stack isn’t that feature-rich nor customizable. It only allows you to launch a predefined set of popular third-party programs including Firefox, Photoshop, CCleaner and many more, (provided they are installed on your system). However, the app will still display icons of all these apps, including the ones not present on your machine. The app’s usage is pretty plain and simple; upon launching it, 8Stack displays a vertical black bar on the right edge of the screen, carrying different shortcuts under Programming, Applications and Websites sections. If you’ve used Windows Phone, it’ll look quite familiar to you, since it resembles the App list quite closely. 8Stack also lets you launch popular websites like Facebook and Bing without having to enter their URL in your web browser.

SF App Upgraded with Courier Avatar

SF Express, a Chinese well known delivery service company based in Shenzhen, China recently upgraded its app by adding more features such as courier‘s photo to enhance the security courier service and convenience.
For example, when users input the delivery information on the app, the app will send the message in advance by including courier status and some identity information (such as job number, photographs, etc.), so that it is possible to prevent “fake delivery man “when receiving packages.
Moreover, to prevent recipient address leakage, SF had previously launched “virtual address” strategy on PC, i.e instead of filling in the recipient addresses, users can use a set of numeric code as the address details, and this set of code systems can only be identified by SF, and now the “virtual address” function is also ported to mobile devices.
For selecting SF mailing address, SF app upgraded with the current popular way of “Shake it”, when users need to send parcels, they only need to shake the phone to find a nearby collection and service outlets.

Tasker for Android: Total Automation, from settings to SMS

Tasker is an automation app for Android. It’s similar to apps like on{x} and Locale, but quite frankly, those apps are toys in comparison to Tasker. The basic concept with Tasker is “if X happens, do Y,” where the ridiculous number of Xs and Ys available making it as complex as it is. An example of a relatively simple Tasker setup is “if the phone is put upside down while ringing, mute the sound,” but the sky is the limit for how complex something can be. In fact, through features such as scene (interface) creation and app exports, Tasker is capable of producing fully functional, standalone Android apps.

tasker
Learning Tasker is guaranteed to revolutionize how you use you Android device. Android and its apps, like other OSes and basically any consumer product in general, are essentially all about making compromises so that the end result works well for as many people as possible. Tasker gives you the ability to custom tailor your device the way you want it, so that you’re not forced to use some lowest common denominator product. The first part og the beginner’s guide to deal with actual Tasker functionality can be found here. An overview of all important Tasker articles on the site, including the rest of the beginner’s guide, can be found in our Tasker content portal.
In this video below you can see a nice demonstration of what Tasker can do and how powerful it is:

3D Home Interior Design App for Android & iOS

Decorating a living space involves more than just placing furniture along the walls and matching the carpet with the curtains; it has a lot to do with finding the right furniture, lighting fixtures, curtains, carpets, and what not. It takes a lot of work, and there’s no ‘try room’ for furniture like there is for clothes, so unless you know what you’re getting will work for sure, you might end up buying the wrong design, style or color of furniture, fixture or decoration items.

3d-design

Autodesk’s Homestyler is a multiplatform app that lets you plan how you’re gong to furnish a room and share your design with other users. You can choose empty rooms to furnish with virtual furniture by picking items that you can actually buy, or using mock ones that don’t have a real-life replica but that you can perhaps get made by a designer or a carpenter. The app is equipped with all types of rooms, furniture pieces, fixtures, electronics, and even a large selection of paint colors for your walls. Homestyler started off as a web app, was brought to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch a couple months ago and now finally has an Android variant as well.
Homestyler lets you create a room in one of three different ways: taking a picture of an actual room, choosing an existing room (furnished or empty) from the app’s gallery, or starting with a blank, empty room and furnishing it from scratch.

Gmail: Sort Emails, Files, Links & Images In Separate Tabs with Mikey

For many, Gmail has now become the de facto email service but despite being powerful, customizable and fairly intuitive, there are a few features Gmail fails to offer out of the box. Though that’s where a number of Google Chrome extensions fill the gap, with Mikey For Gmail being the newest one in this genre. If you fancy Gmail’s new tabbed interface, you’re gonna love Mikey, as the extension allows you to quickly find things in your account by sorting them out under relevant tabs. It does this by indexing results in your Gmail and presents images, links and files from sent and received emails under their pertaining tabs. No, it doesn’t add a search box or anything of the sort, but the extension is just designed to present things separately from one another.

mikey

A few things to keep in mind before getting started: needless to say, Mikey requires access to your Gmail account in order to index content, for which it also stores your data overs its own SSL AES-256 encrypted server. While a service like this might raise a few privacy questions , the developers claim that this is the only way they can index content from your Gmail, and your information is not only encrypted but can also be deleted upon your request anytime you want, by sending an email. More details can be found under the FAQ section on Mikey’s website.
To get started, install the extension from Chrome Web Store. Once ready, sign in to your Gmail account that needs to be tied with Mikey. A small pop up automatically appears in your inbox, prompting you to connect Mikey to your Gmail. You may also go through the FAQ, or click ‘Not right now’ or ‘Never this account’. Clicking ‘Connect’ takes you to the permissions screen, showing you the permissions it requires. To proceed further, you must grant these permissions…

Use Google as a Timer with a Simple Search Command

Google has all kinds of clever search commands that save you time, but Reddit user Blemish points out that you can use a command to keep track of time as well.
ku-xlarge
You can set a quick timer by typing, “set timer X minutes” into Google. Once you hit enter, the timer will count down, and then sound off when the time expires with an obnoxious, possibly never ending tone. If a countdown doesn’t do it for you, then you can also use the command, “set timer for X time.” It’s a pretty simple, but effective way to create an alarm without installing any special software.

Google announces tool to track lost Android phones

Android owners will soon have a way to locate their lost devices. Later this month, anyone with a Google account will be able to locate their devices on a map in real time, activate their ringer, and even wipe their contents. The service will work as part of a new Android Device Manager website, which will seemingly be an upgraded version of a tool that’s already available for business users.
The remote tools will work on all devices running Android 2.2 and up — which, at 98.7 percent of devices, is just about every one of them.
google_find_phone
For Google, the move is a long time coming. Android has quite notably been missing a tool to let users remotely manage their lost devices, while others like Apple and Microsoft have already implemented such features on their mobile operating systems.

How to configure Adblock Plus for Safe and Convenient Browsing

Adblock Plus is without doubt one of the most popular ad blocking tools on today’s Internet. It is available for browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, as well as mobile devices and does a solid job at getting rid of many of the annoying ads that you are exposed to normally on the Internet.

adblock-plus

The extension has been criticized recently for its “acceptable ads” guidelines which allow some ads to be displayed. We do not want to rehash all that has been said about that, only that you can disable that in the program options so that all advertisement is blocked again. You can enable additional features on the page. You may know that the program uses subscription lists for the blocking that you subscribe to, and technically, those three suggestions you find listed here are just that.

Malware Blocking
This list is powered by Malware Domains, a service that aims to block malware by blocking connections to domains that are known to distribute it. It runs in addition to the browser’s own protection, which may warn you about attack pages that you are about to visit. The malware blocking in Adblock Plus does not display warnings on the other hand, it either blocks connections from happening outright, for instance if a clean page tries to load contents from a blocked site, or blocks the connection halfway-through when you visit a blocked domain.

Social Media Button blocking
Social Media buttons are everywhere, and yes, I’m also using them here on this site. They do have two main purposes for me: first, it gives site visitors options to share contents more easily. While experienced users won’t have any problems sharing contents manually, many users do not share contents if no such buttons are displayed on the page. Second, search engines may use those information as signals for a site’s popularity, and a site without them may be doing worse than a site that is making use of them. Anyway, if you do not use social media or never share contents, then you may want to block the buttons to avoid them from being displayed. It also gets rid of potential tracking issues and may increase the load time of websites.
The list that Adblock Plus uses is Fanboy’s Social Blocking List.

Tracking blocking
The third and final option that you have is to disable tracking on the Internet. While it does not take care of all tracking, it blocks a large amount of ad companies from tracking your movement on the Internet.
The list is based on EasyPrivacy.
