Faster Android Startup: Disable Startup Items Using BootManager

Enter BootManager an Xposed framework module that gives you control over every app that is set to auto-start upon boot by the OS. BootManager is a breeze to use even for the most novice of Android users, and all it requires is a rooted device with the Xposed framework installed. More on BootManager and how to use it, after the jump.
bootmanager
When you run the app for the first time, it will list down all apps set to run upon every boot of the OS. Do note that the free version of the app does not list or give access to system apps set to boot with device startup; you only get to see and manage user-installed apps that do so. To control such system apps, you will need to make an in-app donation.
Tap any app to disable its startup entry; a red highlight tells you that the app has been removed from starting up at boot. While the actual boot time is highly ROM dependent, it is the time the OS takes to settle down after boot up that is most concerning. Personally, I can tell you from my own experience that disabling a few apps using BootManager not just stopped the selected apps from starting up, but also shaved off a few good seconds from the moment the OS booted up until it settled down and was fully ready to be used.
For users who still have apps starting up even after disabling them from BootManager, the developer recommends using ReceiverStop – another Xposed framework module.

Google Drive: Find Out at a Glance Who Can Access Your Files

If you have been using the sharing feature of Google Docs (now Google Drive) for some time, you may have quite a few files in the Drive that are accessible to other users. Would you like to review this list?

file-sharing-google-drive
Google Drive lets you share files with specific contacts or you can make them public and anyone can then view your files. Sharing also prevents you from clogging someone else’s mailbox. For instance, if you are sending a large file as an email attachment, a better option would be that you upload the file to Google Drive and share the link instead.
Here’s a simple Google script that will scan your Google Drive and prepare a list all files that have been shared from your Google Drive. To get started, click here to copy the Google Script in your own Google Drive. Then choose Run->Start to execute the Google Script. The script will ask for authorization since it needs to check the sharing permissions of the file in your Google Drive. Say “authorize” and you’ll soon get an email with a list of all the shared files that were found in your Google Drive.
The report, see the above screenshot, will have links to the shared files and also a list of users who can view or edit that particular file. If a file can be viewed by anyone, the user will be mentioned as Public. The Google Script checks the sharing permissions of every single file in your Google Drive and thus it may take a minute or two to finish if you have too many files in the Drive.
Bonus tip: Did you know that you can set an auto-expiry date for your shared links in Google Drive. The shared link will automatically stop working after a certain date or time set by you.

Tablet sales forecast to pass PCs, laptops in 2013

Tablet shipments will surpass total PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2013, forecasts IDC.
Tablets and smartphones will contribute 16.5 percent and 70.5 percent respectively to the worldwide smart connected device market by 2017, according to IDC Worldwide Quarterly Smart Connected Device Tracker.
tablet-shipments-2013

The total PC sales are expected to drop to 13 percent by 2017.
This year, the global smart connected device, which includes PCs, tablets, and smartphones, is set to be $622.4 billion and out of this $423.1 billion will come from the smartphone and tablet segments collectively.
“At a time when the smartphone and tablet markets are showing early signs of saturation, the emergence of lower-priced devices will be a game-changer,” said Megha Saini, research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Smart Connected Device Tracker.
Mobile continues to grow
Continued growth is expected for tablet shipments and their growth will surpass total PC shipments on an annual basis by the end of 2015.
Strong growth is also predicted for smartphones that will continue shipping in high volumes, and surpass 1.4 billion units in 2015. Globally, smartphones will account for 69 percent of all smart connected device shipments in 2015.

USB Condom protects your devices from nasty ports

Devices such as tablets and smartphones use a USB port to do the double duty of charging and transferring data. That means if you plug your device into a public outlet or an unfamiliar computer in order to charge it, you’re at some risk for getting juice-jacked. That is, someone could steal your data.
UsbCondoms_art_1024x1024
The folks at Int3.cc have a solution. They call it the USB condom and it’s designed to stop the unwanted flow of data from your device to the questionable outlet or computer. The condom is not what you think. Instead it’s a circuit board that plugs into your device’s USB port and keeps the power pins in the plug open, while blocking the data pins. With the USB condom between your device and the anonymous plug, you can supposedly plug in with peace of mind.
A price has not yet been set for the dongle, but if you’re interested in practicing safe charging, check back in.

Reset Web Browser To Default Settings

Resetting your browser to its default state can often fix problems. For example, a program you install may change your search engine, install toolbars, and do other unwelcome things. Or you may have accidentally changed advanced settings on your own.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome has an option that will reset itself to its default settings. To find this option, open Chrome’s menu and select Settings. Perform a search for “reset browser” and you’ll see the Reset browser settings button.

You could also just plug chrome://settings/resetProfileSettings into Chrome’s address bar to pull up this page.
Use this option and Google Chrome will erase almost everything — your extensions, settings, cookies, history, home page, default search engine, and more. Chrome won’t delete your bookmarks or passwords, so your important personal data will be kept.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox also allows you to return it to its default state. To do so, click the Firefox menu button, point to Help, and select Troubleshooting Information.

Firefox will erase your extensions and themes, browser preferences, search engines, site-specific preferences, and other browser settings. However, Firefox will attempt to preserve your bookmarks, history, passwords, form history, and cookies.

Internet Explorer

The desktop version of Internet Explorer has the ability to reset its settings to the default ones. If you’re using Windows 8, resetting Internet Explorer on the desktop will also reset Modern Internet Explorer’s settings.
To do this, open the Internet Explorer desktop app, click the gear menu, and select Internet options. Click over to the Advanced tab and click the Reset button at the bottom of the Internet Options window. Internet Explorer warns you that “You should only use this if your browser is in an unusable state,” but that’s just to dissuade you from wiping out all your personal settings unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Confirm it again by pressing Reset button. After resetting Internet Explorer, you’ll have to restart your computer for your changes to take effect.

Task Scheduler for Windows

Freebyte Task Scheduler is a useful and very user-friendly Windows application that allows you to start other installed applications automatically, be it periodically or at predefined times. More about its interface, usage and installation right after the jump.

Freebyte-Task-Scheduler

Thanks to its portable nature, Freebyte Task Scheduler doesn’t even required to be installed on your computer. Just extract its portable EXE file from the downloaded ZIP archive, and start using it. Upon launch, you will see that the app sports a barebones UI and doesn’t feature any complicated settings to confuse you. Its functionality is also pretty straightforward; simply schedule programs to launch on their own based on your set frequency and time, and you can do it all with just a few clicks.
Once you launch the application, you see blank space all around, which fills up as you keep adding new tasks to the list. The application then displays the task name, frequency of occurrence, time at which the task will trigger, activity state, and last started time for each of them. The bottom part of the UI carries a row of icons for adding a new task as well as deleting, modifying or executing the selected task.
To add a new task to the list, click the + button from the bottom bar. You are then presented with a new window titled ‘Define new task’, where you need to enter a few details. Go ahead and choose when the task should be executed (once at a specific date, daily or weekly). If it is a certain date, then you also need to define the exact date; similarly, for weekly execution, select the day(s) of the week on which you want it to run. After that, select its starting time. Next, you need to enter a name for the task, specify the program’s location (path), and enter any optional parameter for it if you need. For instance, if you want Google Chrome to be launched, simply select its EXE file as the program location. Once done, click Save to add it your list, and the Freebyte Task Scheduler will do the rest.

Skype to Get 3D Video Calling Functionality?

Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Skype, Mark Gillett, confirmed that the company is working on 3D video calling functionality. Though he warns that it will still be awhile before such a feature is available – and probably longer yet until it is widely adopted – he also states that he “can imagine a day” when 3D use is more widespread.
skype 3D

With 3D technologies — and specifically for this project, 3D video calls — the users would require cameras capable of recording a 3D video. This setup would require users to have multiple cameras connected to the computer, all of them calibrated to a precise degree in relation to each other and positioned properly.
Said Gillett: We have [this technology] in the lab, we know how to make it work and we’re looking at the ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market … We’re in the first year of your TV at home potentially having a camera attached to it, but we’re several years away from the cameras capturing 3D in that context. You’ll see much more penetration of 3D on TVs, on computers and ultimately in smartphones, probably, ahead of seeing it for sending a video call.
The subject of 3D video aside, the executive also said that Skype is looking into offering 1080p video calls to devices other than the Xbox One, and that laptops and tablets would gain this ability before smartphones because of the processing power requirements. He also touched on the subject of Sony, saying it is possible such could come to the PS4.

Apple Patents iOS Unlocking Methods That Determine Level Of User Access To Device Features And Software

A big request from parents regarding iOS has been that Apple implement user accounts on its mobile devices, in order to make it so that a parent can sign in with greater access to device features and apps than a child, for instance. It’s a system that already has an analogue on the desktop, and that Google has seen fit to implement with multiple user accounts with varying levels of permissions for tablets running Android 4.3 and higher. A new patent granted to Apple today (spotted by AppleInsider) describes a way of changing device access depending on who’s doing the accessing.
Apple’s newly-awarded patent describes a system wherein the method used by a user to unlock a device via gesture-based input would determine what apps are made available, as well as what hardware functions. So, for instance, one gesture (could be the drawing of a specific shape or letter with a finger tip) might allow access only to games content on the phones, while another could offer up access to an entire category of apps provided through corporate deployment, but not to other features.
The system Apple has patented also allows for gestures to unlock the phone directly into specific apps, so that one could launch the email app and keep a user within that bit of software exclusively, for instance. Other incarnations could limit access to certain phone features, including the camera and mic, or to in-app purchases, locking down a device for worry-free sharing with a child.

Why Microsoft Bought Nokia and What It Means for You

Nokia Microsoft
Surprising news yesterday, Microsoft has bought up Nokia’s phone division for a whopping $7.2 billion. What does that mean for you? What will change for Nokia and why did Microsoft even buy them in the first place?
What does it mean for Microsoft and Nokia?
First, let’s have a look at what Microsoft is getting in return for its money.
•Nokia’s smartphone and mobile phone business, including the manufacturing and assembly bits.
•Nokia personnel, including the design team, the sales/operations team, and the Stephen Elop team.
•A bunch of patents, but not all the patents.
•The ability to license Nokia HERE map technology, but not HERE itself.
•A place to crash in Finland.
In a presentation, Microsoft says that bringing Nokia phone in-house “protects Widows Phone future” as having a hardware division now means that Windows phone will last as long as Microsoft does.
Nokia’s sales went down 24 percent only last quarter year over year. Even its dumbphone sales, usually Nokia’s strength, plummeted 39 percent. Things don’t look good for Nokia and Microsoft just threw them a lifeline.
Nokia
What does this mean for you?
Not much. If you already own a Windows Phone, you won’t be getting much more Apps and if you’re planning on buying one soon, you’ll have a lot less options. HTC and Samsung are Microsoft only other partners and after this new coalition, support for both phone makers is going to die soon.

Ambitious Nokia?

When people think of Nokia, they think of a solid phone that could be used to make a phone call after it had been used to knock a wildebeest unconscious. Back in the day the Nokia was the top brand as it was indestructible and very reliable; however it has slid down the market in recent years. In the last few days computer giants Microsoft has been in talks and has purchased Nokia that hopes to create a new relationship of a solid structure phone with an awesome and user friendly operating system that could rival Samsung and iPhone. Nokia’s biggest market is the already highly saturated Chinese market, which has many smartphones from foreign and domestic firms. With a huge population and emerging economy,  Samsung and iPhone are here but there is rivalry from domestic brands such as Huawei, Lenonova, ThL and Zoppo, with the latter two being offered , therefore the international market can also have access to purchase these models.
Nokia believes that China is the place where they can success and reach their goal and possibly reclaim their place on the throne in the phone market. However the Nokia brand has a nostalgia value that people recognize it so for Nokia to shake this reputation it needs to hit the market with something fresh and different with new attractions and features, and this is hopefully where Microsoft comes in. Microsoft have attempted the phone market before but has proven to be unsuccessful so maybe with Nokia they can combine their ideas and create a terrific phone that will surprise the market and swing people towards them, or it could be like other attempts and fail miserably with a few mangers being blamed and sacked. Only time can tell of this combination, just hope it isn’t too late for them

Make Your Windows PC to Look Like OS X

If you have seen the pictures or the videos of OS X Mavericks and want to make your Windows look like OS X Mavericks, you can do so by downloading and installing OS X Mavericks transformation pack.

windows-osx

OS X 10.9 Mavericks transformation pack is the first and only Mavericks transformation pack available for XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 operating system. According to the developer, this transformation pack includes Mavericks/iOS7 themes, wallpapers, user picture, Mavericks/iOS7 icons, sounds, cursor, logon background, OS X-style dock, and Launchpad.
The cool thing is that the setup file of the transformation pack includes UXStyle Core software that automatically edits original system files to add third-party visual styles support. In simple words, you don’t need to manually download and run UXStyle Core or any other software before installing OS X Mavericks transformation pack.
Most notably, it uses iOS 7 icons for a lot of apps, rather than replicas of the Mac icons. If you aren’t one to get hung up on details though, you can certainly squint your eyes and pretend to be using a Mac. The developer also kindly made it easy to uninstall the program and revert to Windows’ original UI, so there’s no harm in trying.
