Skype Makes Group Video Calling Free for All Users
Skype group video calls used to require a subscription to Skype Premium, but today the service announced that group video calling will be free starting today for Windows, OS X, and Xbox One users, and will roll out to all other Skype platforms soon.
Group video calls allow Skype users to connect with up to 10 people in a video chat at the same time, and Skype users have been clamoring for the company to make the feature free—a la Google Hangouts—for some time now. People using Skype on other platforms, like mobile devices, will have to wait a little bit before group video calling gets to them too, but it’s on the way. Hit the link below for more information. Strategy Analytics: Android tablet shipments up to 65.8% in Q1
Global tablet shipments in Q1 2014 reached 57.6 million units, up 19 percent from 48.3 million in Q1 2013. Breaking those numbers down, Android secured 65.8 percent global share, iOS grabbed 28.4 percent, and Windows secured 5.8 percent.
Here’s the full breakdown:
The latest figures are from Strategy Analytics, which says Google is making steady progress as it now commands two thirds of the tablet market share. Apple, meanwhile, has changed its product release cycle to the holiday timeframe, so iPad losing share is to be expected until the final months of the calendar year.
In short, the Android-iOS war is far from over, but ever since Google surpassed Apple, it doesn’t look likely to lose its lead. Yet much more interesting will be watching to see how Microsoft’s numbers change in the next few quarters. [via thenextweb]

Use Middle Click on Your Mouse to Simplyify Tasks
That wheel in the middle of your mouse is good for more than just scrolling—in fact, the button can do quite a bit. Here are some of the oft-ignored shortcuts built in to the middle mouse button.
If you’re on a laptop and don’t have a middle mouse button, you can probably still perform many of these actions. Many laptops will simulate a middle click if you press the left and right buttons simultaneously, or you can add that ability with a program like AutoHotkey. Of course, most of these things are easily accessible from other places, too—they’re just a bit quicker if you have a middle mouse button.
In Your Browser
Either with Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer you can:
- Close a tab by middle-clicking on the tab
- Open a link in a new tab by middle-clicking on the link (this also works in the address bar’s drop-down menu and back and forward buttons)
- Open all bookmarks in a folder at once by middle-clicking on the folder in your bookmarks bar
- Enable auto-scroll by middle-clicking on a web page
- Paste text in Firefox with a middle click, by enabling the
middlemouse.paste
option in about:config
In Windows
Apart from the browser shortcuts, Windows has a few other shortcuts built-in for the middle mouse button. You can:
- Open a new instance or window of a program by middle-clicking its taskbar icon
- Close a window by hovering over its taskbar icon, then middle-clicking the thumbnail that pops up
- Enable auto-scroll in Microsoft Office by middle-clicking in the document
For more custom actions and shortcuts check 3rd party applications like AutoHotkey.
In Linux
We’d be remiss not to mention Linux, which has one particularly famous (and awesome) middle click shortcut: if you middle click in a textbox, you can paste text from the clipboard in just about any app. It’s pretty darn handy!

Spam turns 20 and is still going strong
We recently passed an Internet milestone: April 12 marked the 20-year anniversary of commercialized spam. But even with two decades and trillions of unsolicited messages behind us, it seems there is still no end in sight.
Cloudmark wrote a blog post and created an infographic looking back at key dates in the 20-year history of spam. That first blast on Usenet News was nothing. Internet service providers, businesses, and individuals have invested millions and wasted countless hours in the battle against spam.
According to Kaspersky Lab, spam still makes up nearly 70 percent of all email sent. That means, roughly speaking, that if you were to receive 100 emails today, there’s a good chance that 70 of them will be unwanted solicitations.
The good news is that things actually have improved dramatically on the email side. While 70 percent of all email might be spam, webmail services and email servers have greatly improved the ability to identify and block those messages before they get in the door. Most email client software also has very good junkmail filtering capabilities. The result is that only a handful of the spam messages intended for you ever actually make it to your inbox. No more roaming charges for EU citizens from December 2015
The European Parliament has voted to scrap the roaming fees charged
for using a mobile phone while abroad. Under the wide-ranging telecoms reforms,
the cost of making a call or downloading internet data in another EU
country will be the same as at home. The change is due to take effect
from 15 December next year. It still requires approval from EU
governments.
Some consumers have faced bills for thousands of pounds after falling foul of current high roaming charges. In recent years the EU has legislated to lower the costs, so telecoms operators have been forced to cap their fees. A European Commission survey in February suggested that 94% of Europeans limit their use of the web when travelling in Europe because of the cost of mobile roaming.
The package was adopted by 534 votes to 25. Last year the cap for internet browsing was lowered to 45 cents (39 pence) per MB, from 70 euro cents (60 pence) per MB in 2012.

As 4G networks offer even faster download speeds, data consumption is expected to rise exponentially. [via BBC News]

It won’t wear a hole in your pocket, or your wallet, but this
ANDROID 4.0 SMART PHONE WATCH "ZGPAX S5" - 1.54 INCH TOUCH SCREEN DISPLAY, CAMERA, DUAL CORE CPU BLACK SUMMARY
does everything you need a phone and a watch to do.
Check out the top 4 features below.
1. GSM SIM Card Slot – Choose Your Network!
To begin, insert a GSM SIM Card into the Dual Core Android Smart Phone Watch’s built-in slot, which will connect you to your preferred wireless network so you can make calls and browse the internet. Android 4.0 has a solid platform for you to customize settings, layouts, download apps and more. Use it to personalize the phone, making it your own.
|
2. Dual Core MTK6577 Dual Core
Powering the best smartwatch on the market – when comparing cost/value – is a dual core CPU that reaches speeds of up to 1GHz. This is enough power to keep lag times at bay, run the apps that you need and most of what you want as well. You can’t play Call of Duty on this smartwatch, but you could play Temple Run, write a report, watch a video, and take pictures – all multitasked, since the Android system is built for that kind of working.
|
3. 5 Megapixel Camera
Speaking of pictures, did I forget to mention the 5 megapixel camera? That’s a step above a lot of 5 inch Smartphones in this price range. Despite this smartwatch’s size, it contains what you have come to expect in a phone – a camera that you can use to remember life, share life and communicate clearly via images.
|
4. OGS Capacitive Touch Screen
All of these features are controlled via the OGS capacitive touch screen, which is sensitive, but not too sensitive. It won’t hold you back, just like the diminutive size of this high tech, futuristic phone.

8 Products That Were Ahead of Their Time
We all love innovation…when it works. Unfortunately when it comes to technological breakthroughs, timing is everything. For instance, did you know that Microsoft showed off its tablet PC way back in 2000? And who could forget Nintendo’s attempt at a VR headset with its Virtual Boy in 1995?
Many of those gadgets were simply ahead of their time. To give credit where credits due, we thought we would round up eight of these lone-gone pioneers.
Virtual Boy
In 1995, the Virtual Boy promised true 3D graphics. That obviously failed…miserably, but hopefully the Oculus Rift will succeed where the VB failed. We just hope Facebook doesn’t mess this up…
Super Tower Cases
Dream Machine 2000 featured a massive desktop chassis. With them being really popular now, it looks like we were ahead of the curve, again.
Solid State Drives
The first desktop SSDs were big, slow, and insanely expensive. Now SSDs are more and more popular have great performance and capacity at an acceptable price.
3DFX SLI
3dfx introduced the world to Scan-Line Interleave in 1998, paving the road for Nvidia SLI and AMD CrossFire.
Nokia Communicator 9000
Hailed as the world’s first smartphone, this techno-brick surfaced in 1996 with a 24MHz CPU.
HP Compaq TC1000
Microsoft showed off a tablet PC prototype back in 2000, but it never caught on.
Rio PMP 300
The original MP3 player, it was around for three years before Apple’s iPod stole the spotlight.
Dell Streak
The world laughed at this phone/tablet (plablet) Frankenphone in 2010, but now they’re catching on with phones like Samsung’s Galaxy Note and Sony’s Xperia Z. [via maximumpc]
