What Happens in 1 Minute on the Internet

According to Intel, the number of networked devices now matches the world’s population, which means the Internet is a frenetic, crowded place.

Whether logging on via laptop or a mobile device, most people who are online have a daily Internet routine that includes sending emails or checking Facebook. But what about in one minute? Analysts at Intel have crunched the numbers and have looked at what exactly happens in one online minute. Here are some of the highlights they have come up with:

• More than 204 million emails are sent worldwide.
• Facebook, which gained its 1 billionth user last year, logs at least 6 million page views per minute.
• More than 1.3 million video clips are watched on YouTube, the bulk of which are perhaps cute cat videos or the latest take on the Harlem Shake.
• More than 61,000 hours of music are listened to on Pandora, an internet streaming radio station.
• The data also showed the importance of e-commerce sites running smoothly amid the congestion. In the course of one minute, Amazon nets $83,000 in sales, according to Intel’s calculations. That tells you just how bad of a day Amazon had when it went down for nearly an hour in late January.

The traffic explosion is expected to only get bigger by 2015, when the number of networked devices is expected to be double the world’s population. In anticipation of a potential online traffic jam, Intel said it working on a next-generation communications platform code named “Crystal Forest” that will “boost performance and beef up network security to handle the increasing network traffic.”

Try New YouTube’s HTML5 Player

From college courses to TED talks, YouTube is a great source of educational lectures. The downside to this unique method of learning is the time it can take. If you need to cram a bunch of video into a short amount of time, Reddit user ladyzebra suggests switching to YouTube’s HTML5 player and turning the playback speed up.
To enable this, you’ll need to activate the HTML5 trial here. This version of the player supports turning up video playback to either 1.5x or 2x the normal pace. Depending on how slowly the speaker talks, you may be able to save up to half the time you’d normally spend watching the video. Most videos I found worked best at 1.5x speed, but there will always be that one person who talks impossibly slow that can benefit from the fastest option.

Is Amazon’s Cloud Drive a viable Dropbox replacement?

When Amazon launched its Cloud Drive app for Mac and Windows back in May, a lack of proper file syncing prevented the service from becoming a full-blown Dropbox and SkyDrive replacement. The company has today addressed that shortcoming with the introduction of a file synchronization folder that will let you access your documents, music, and photos across multiple computers.

Amazon’s implementation closely resembles what we’ve seen from rival platforms; files placed in the specified folder are automatically uploaded to the web and will also be synced with any other computers you install Cloud Drive on. As before, Cloud Drive users receive five gigabytes of storage for free, so if you’re not deeply entrenched in someone else’s cloud, Amazon’s offering could be worth another look.

TabJuggler – Juggle with Your Tabs

When you get to that point in the day where you have twenty tabs open in several windows, everything gets a little chaotic. Tab Juggler is an extension for the Chrome web browser that adds several tab management options to it. It adds the following features:

• Move all tabs in to a single window. This merges all Chrome windows and the tabs open in them into a single browser window.
• Open each tab in its own browser window.
• Open windows for each hostname. This sorts all tabs by hostname into browser windows.
• Sort all tabs by title, hostname or web address.
• Search tabs in all windows or only the active window (for title or url)

• Close matched tabs – This will close all matching tabs in the browser.
• Close tabs that do not match – This closes all tabs not listed in the results.
• Detach matched – This moves all matching tabs into their own window.
• Detach tabs that do not match – This moves all other tabs in to their own window.

How to send Large Files Over the Internet For Free

If you need to transfer a large file to another Pc over the internet but you don’t know where to start, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! This guide will cover the simplest and most effective ways to send large files to another PC over the internet. And best of all, you won’t have to pay a dime.
File Compression
If you have a file which is too large to send as an email attachment, try to compress the file first. Not only will you shrink the file’s size but it will also make the transfer go faster. Most computers come with file compression utilities built in so compressing your documents to a .zip file shouldn’t be much of a hassle.
Here is how it’s done:
For Windows:
1. Find the file you want to compress
2. Right click on it and select “Send To”
3. Choose “Compressed (zipped) Folder”
For Mac
1. Find the file you want to compress
2. Two-finger click/command+click on the file
3. Select “Compress …”

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
If compressing your files seems a bit too much of a hassle, try using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Designed to transfer large files, FTP requires the installation of a FTP client. We won’t go into detail about how to use this type of software but to get you started, we’ve listed a few FTP programs.
Filezilla: Filezilla is a widely used FTP client which can be installed on most operating systems. Filezilla is completely free, open source and supports a wide range of transfer protocols.
WinSCP: Sort for Windows Secure Copy, WinSCP is a free and open source FTP client which doesn’t require many resources to run. In addition to FTP transfers, it also supports SFTP and SCP (secure transfers).
Cyberduck: This FTP client can only be used on OS X and has plenty of advanced features including FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3 and many more.
FireFTP: If you don’t feel like downloading a desktop program, make sure to check out FireFTP which allows file transfers right from your Firefox browser.

Another way to transfers files is to upload them to an online storage service. Cloud storage has become immensely popular the past few years and there are literally thousands of different cloud service providers. OUYA Begins shipping, Hits Retail Stores on June 4th

Early backers of the OUYA game console got a nice surprise last week when Julie Uhrman, the project’s founder, announced consoles had shipped a few days ago. If you are one of those early backers, your unit should be arriving any day now. When the new console arrives, new owners will find:

• 104 titles will be immediately available with many more on the way
• OUYA will require an update on first launch but it will be ultra quick
• You’ll need a credit/debit card to download games… even free ones
• OUYA supports up to 4 controllers and although you can buy more, it’ll work with Xbox/PS3 controllers among others

The folks at OUYA indicate they will be launching at retail locations starting June 4th. In an interesting little twist,they also announced plans are available for anyone who wants to 3D print an OUYA for themselves.

Facebook Status is being Threatened by Instant Messaging Apps

According to the Chinese NetEase tech news on April 1, the popular instant messaging applications are threatening the status of the Facebook as a giant of social network. Tens of millions of young people are turning to instant messaging applications and such social tide is sweeping across North America, Asia and Europe.

These applications include startup companies Kik, Whatsapp, KakaoTalk, LINE of NHN Group and Tencent Wechat. Combing the SMS and social networking, instant messaging bypasses wireless carriers and initial web-based social networks and provides a quick sharing method for smartphone users to exchange all the way from short text to images and even to video clips.
With 10 million fans so far, Facebook is still the world’s most popular social networking site, and in the recent years it keeps strengthening the development of the mobile field and providing the most popular Facebook applications for smartphone users. However, it’s said from some entire Silicon Valley investors that the popular instant messaging applications may be a threat to Facebook’s dominance. Maybe in the next few years, instant messaging platform can support games and other third-party applications to attract Facebook users.
However, users who use instant messaging applications still use Facebook. So far there is no sign that this social media giant starts losing its users. At the conference of this week, the company will launch an Android system, or even launch Facebook smartphone.
