Google is Releasing a Unified Chat Client Called “Babble”

If you’ve been keeping up at home, we’ve heard a ton of reports lately that Google is releasing a unified chat client called “Babble.” Well, turns out that client is actually called Babel, but many of the other rumored features were right. Babel will be available cross-platform on Android, iOS, Chrome, Gmail, and Google Plus, but as of right now, Google Voice isn’t part of the list. It may come at a later point, but not right out of the gate.
Babel will allow you to access the same conversation list from any of those platforms, and features a new, conversation based UI, picture messaging, improved cross-device notifications, and picture messaging. That’s a pretty fully featured app, and it’s definitely going to improve our communication experience as a whole.
Babel as a name does make sense for Google’s project, though, especially if you consider the Biblical meaning of the word and the story of the Tower of Babel. However, it still might not be the official name of the app, whenever it’s released, so take it with a grain of salt. Personally, I think Google will opt for something a bit more accessible and catchy, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Equalize Your Sound Levels Down, Not Up, for Better Quality

There are several ways to equalize sound levels. You can do it with the sound player application, through the sound card utility software and also with built-in operating system tools. However, like a Lifehacker user pointed out, if you must equalize, you should turn the frequencies you don’t like down, rather than turning the good ones up.

A lot of people say you shouldn’t equalize at all, but if you do, you should try to avoid raising levels:

stick to removing frequencies. Your computer is better at this than adding stuff. Better option: Get an old Sony amp or whatever, connect your computer, turn up bass. Sounds way better.

If you raise levels with a software equalizer, you’re probably going to encounter some distortion, which will make your music sound worse, not better. Instead, find the curve you like, then “shift” everything down so your highest points are at 0. You’ll probably have to turn your computer’s volume up a bit to make up for it, but your music will sound much better.

Robotic Arms that Can Complete Tasks on Their Own

DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is developing an autonomous robotic arm that requires only simple commands to performs complex tasks, like changing a tire or defusing explosive devices.

In the past, we’ve seen a variety of robotic arms that can do a variety of things, from chucking cinder blocks across a room to being controlled by thought. But behind the majority of these mechanical feats was a human guiding the robot’s every move, step-by-step. That might be fine inside a laboratory, but what about somewhere a little less convenient, like a war zone, for instance? That’s why DARPA has begun development on autonomous robotic arms that require only simple commands to performs complex tasks, like searching a bag or defusing explosive devices.

Robots are increasingly used by the military as a means to keep soldiers out of harm’s way, but each bot tends to have a highly specific set of functions due to programming limits. DARPA’s Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM) program hopes to create one or more types of bots that can perform multiple tasks when needed with very little human interaction.

Is Amazon’s Cloud Drive a viable Dropbox replacement?

When Amazon launched its Cloud Drive app for Mac and Windows back in May, a lack of proper file syncing prevented the service from becoming a full-blown Dropbox and SkyDrive replacement. The company has today addressed that shortcoming with the introduction of a file synchronization folder that will let you access your documents, music, and photos across multiple computers.

Amazon’s implementation closely resembles what we’ve seen from rival platforms; files placed in the specified folder are automatically uploaded to the web and will also be synced with any other computers you install Cloud Drive on. As before, Cloud Drive users receive five gigabytes of storage for free, so if you’re not deeply entrenched in someone else’s cloud, Amazon’s offering could be worth another look.

Microsoft rolls out completely redesigned Calendar

Microsoft has rolled out a redesign for Outlook.com’s Calendar, bringing with it new and modified functionality in addition to the visual updates to provide an all-around new, improved experience. The feature is said to be faster than it has ever been, and is currently available to some users, with the rest getting it in the next few days as it is rolled out to users across the globe.

The redesign follows Microsoft’s so-called “content over chrome” optimization method that puts more focus on the functionality aspects of the service, with the service being touted as primarily focusing on appointments and events, the two biggest reasons one would use a calendar service. Adding, editing, and accessing information on the calendar has been expedited with the new design.
