Microsoft’s Office for Android: Not until fall 2014?
An alleged roadmap for Microsoft’s two-year wave of coming Office updates implies Office for iOS and Android may be further away than many industry watchers thought.
An alleged roadmap for Microsoft’s coming ‘Gemini’ wave of Office updates, if accurate, indicates Microsoft’s Office for iOS and Android — as well as Outlook for Windows RT — may be further away than many hoped and expected. It kicks off with “Gemini wave 1.0,” which includes the “Blue” Metro-Style/Windows Store complements to the core set of Office products — namely, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. From what I’ve heard previously, these four apps will be more touch-centric and will work on Windows 8 and Windows RT. They will supplement, not replace, the desktop/Win32 versions of these apps that already exist. These apps will be made available to customers by October 2013, according to the purported roadmap.
Also on the roadmap for fall 2014 is what’s listed as iOS/Android support for Office. One would assume this is the expected and widely rumored Office for iPad release. It could, however, be Office for iPhone and Android phone, given that it’s not listed on the roadmap as being tablet-specific. Rumors about Microsoft’s plans to deliver Office for iOS and Android have been circulating for more than a year. Microsoft officials have never outright denied these apps were in development. A number of us Microsoft watchers heard from our various sources that these apps were on track to be delivered by early- to mid-2013.The most recent rumors/expectations have been that Microsoft may be making these mobile iOS/Android versions of Office available as part of an Office 365 subscription of some kind. The alleged roadmap makes no mention of an Office 365/subscription tie-in. It only mentions “iOS/Android” as a Gemini Fall 2014 deliverable.
In sum, this is what the alleged roadmap indicates:
Gemini Wave 1.0 (October 2013): Windows Blue app updates
Gemini Wave 1.5 (April 2014): Office for Mac; Office RT refresh; Perceptive Pixel support; Windows Phone support refresh

Tencent Denies Rumors That WeChat Will Charge Users
Recently, a hot topic circulates on the internet that China Tencent’s popular mobile chatting application WeChat(or Wexin) will charge users in the coming future. This is because that some operators keep imposing pressure on Tencent and also, according to the Minister of Industry and Information Technology that it would certainly begin to charge fees. However, this so-called “charge” refers to operators will charge Tencent , so most ordinary users are likely to use the WeChat for free, just like the Chinese popular instant message QQ .
On April 11, the team issued a statement to the users through WeChat, saying that they will never ever charge customers because they’ve already paid for Internet access.
Translation of the following Chinese:
“A kindly reminder: recently a rumor is circulating on the internet that WeChat will start charging fees. We’re here to make this clear that this rumor is purely malicious, please do not believe it. WeChat will never ever charge users, thanks your support. We are now working hard to develop new features for the next version, hope to make WeChat better. – April 11. ”

Data Privacy: Encrypt your Cloud Storage for Free
A few different tools can help safeguard the privacy of your data when you store it on a remote server. One of our favorites is BoxCryptor, an easy-to-use encryption program that works with all of the most popular cloud services, is free to use (though you can pay for upgrades), and helps keep your data safe.
BoxCryptor is basically a virtual hard disk that encrypts files on the fly using 256-bit AES encryption. Unlike TrueCrypt, another popular on-the-fly encryption tool, BoxCryptor encrypts individual files, not an entire volume or container. Consequently, your BoxCryptor-encrypted files sync with your cloud storage service immediately after you save them, whereas TrueCrypt syncing occurs only after you finish encrypting an entire volume. BoxCryptor encrypts and decrypts your files locally, and it doesn’t transmit your password to third parties. As a result, your files remain unreadable to outsiders even if hackers manage to steal your password or otherwise breach your cloud storage provider’s defenses.

Google Helps You to Plan Your Digital Afterlife
Our digital life has become more and more important to us that we wouldn’t be able to live without it anymore. Photographs of friends and loved ones, email correspondences, and school and work documents are all part of many people’s digital footprints today. But what happens with your digital legacy once you’re not around anymore?
Google now has incorporated what they call the ‘Inactive Account Manager’ into its services. What will it do for you, you ask? Well, after a user-defined timeout period which starts from your last login, your Google account will be marked as inactive. Ofcourse, Google will first make sure your account is actually inactive by sending you a confirmation email and text message. If Google receives no response from you, contacts of your choosing can be notified after the timeout period that you are no longer using your account. There’s even an option to share data with those contacts at this time. Any of the following can be shared: +1s, Blogger, Contacts and Circles, Drive, Gmail, Google+ Profiles, Pages and Streams, Picasa Web Albums, Google Voice and YouTube. A warning text and email will be sent before any data sharing occurs. The final step is deletion of your account after 3-12 months, which is completely optional. Google will erase your account and its contents if you so desire.
