Ethical Technology?

The good old US of A, a country that is the self-proclaim leaders of the free world, which brings democracy where ever they damn well feel like. It has created a dream for many people to aim for, either being a family man with their own business of a Hollywood red carpet walking star. The USA though has had its problems recently, and if you have been hiding under the rock there has been several incidents with guns. The senate is torn apart as the president push for stronger regulations; many Republicans believe this goes against the constitution of the “right to bear arms”, refers to the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, contained in the Bill of Rights. I won’t go into great depth into this controversial topic; I would like to focus a little bit about how technology plays a role in this.

As much as some people would like to deny it, technology is a huge source of information. The internet is hard to regulate with millions of websites floating around, some carrying useful information and others being somewhat similar to something.com. Now the reason I mention about the gun debate in the USA is because a young and proud Texan has produce a gun via 3D printing. 3D printing is a procedure by making a three-dimensional solid object of almost any shape from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where layers of material are placed in different shapes. 3D printing is considered different from traditional machining techniques, which mostly rely on the removal of material by methods for instance cutting or drilling. This Texan known as Cody Wilson, has successfully used 3D printing to produce a gun that actually fires and being the good sport that he is, he has decided to put the blueprints online so the rest of us at home can give it a try. Cody Wilson’s masterpiece is a pistol known as “The Liberator”, sounding like an 80s action hero or pro wrestler “The Liberator can actually fire meaning it can cause harm if someone holding it wishes to do so because remember guns don’t kill people, people do. The gun itself does not look like a traditional gun as it is made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) but with a little modification it could support bullets allowing it to fire these bullets. In recent days since the blueprints for this gun were made there has been over 100,000 downloads. Should people be worried? I don’t think so because let’s face it if you really wanted a gun you can always find a place to buy once, especially in countries like the USA. Are the people that are downloading these blueprints doing it out of interest? Which is more of a worry? The fact the internet holds this information or the fact that now a tool that can be used to instrument the death of others can be made from the same material as LEGO bricks can be made via a 3D printer. This is an ethical question.

There are many things online that insist people on how to commit suicide or how to build their own nuclear bomb (I don’t how factual it is), but the whole process of creating this gun is considered so simple thanks to 3D printing. Also for this gun to actually work you need to require bullets and a metal firing pin, which at the moment nobody has developed through 3D printing. Gun related attacks are going to happen again, no matter what the government does, it may reduce them but it will never eliminate them. 3D printing it becoming more popular and will become more common as technology advances. Of course the internet will offer every piece of information that is needed and not needed as it has always done. To read a longer and more detailed account please click here.

Resize Youtube Player To Window Size

resize yt
Chrome/Firefox with Greasemonkey: If you like to watch YouTube videos without all the clutter of the side bars, userscript Resize YouTube Player can help by automatically stretching the video you’re watching to fill the entire browser window.
Using this script will also automatically change the video’s resolution (where available) to a higher quality depending on how large your window is. Resizing the window will automatically adjust the video to fill as much space as it can. If you scroll down, though, you can still see all the typical YouTube content like comments, related videos, and more. They’re still there, just tucked away so you have a distraction-free viewing experience.

Viber – free messaging and voice calling app for Windows and Mac

viber_
Viber, the popular free of charge messaging along with voice calling app, has gotten a massive up-date and has launched desktop clients for both Windows and Operating-system X. Each iOS and Android mobile phone apps are now allowing you to prepare and send video emails. An in-app advertising (which can be differently enabled in the apps options if it affects you) informs you whenever you receive a new message or call on the particular iOS app. The particular desktop apps themselves are pretty good as well, and are avalable with the extra feature involving video telephone calls (currently throughout beta).
To use Viber on your desktop, you must first have it installed on your phone. To set up Viber on your PC, enter your phone number (with the country code), and you will receive an activation code in the Viber app, which you have to enter in the desktop app to verify it.
Telephone calls can easily be transmitted between your PC and cellular phone. Other important updates towards the iOS and Android mobile phone app consist of Whatsapp-like online position and final seen time visibility (that can be enabled or perhaps disabled), the capability to automatically download received pictures and movies, adding sayings to video tutorials and images before delivering them, a bunch of new 3D stickers, and enhanced interface.

How Wireless Charging Works

Wireless charging is one of many new features appearing in the latest smartphones, from Google’s Nexus 4 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 to Nokia’s Lumia 920. There are even cases that add wireless charging capabilities to Apple’s iPhone 5.
Wireless chargers use magnetic induction. They offer the promise of being able to place a device on a surface and have it charge automatically — no fiddling with cables required.
Just place the smartphone on a wireless charger and it will start charging. Of course, the wireless charger itself must still be plugged into the wall. Wireless charging is more accurately described as “inductive charging” because it uses magnetic induction. The short explanation is that it uses magnetism to transmit energy. The current coming from the wall power outlet moves through the wire in the wireless charger, creating a magnetic field. The magnetic field creates a current in the coil inside the device. This coil is connected to the battery and the current charges the battery. Devices must have the appropriate hardware in them to support wireless charging — a device without the appropriate coil can’t charge wirelessly.
qi_charging
Wireless charging is becoming more and more common. There’s one problem: The companies involved haven’t settled on a single standard for wireless charging. There are three standards: Qi, PMA (Power Matter Alliance) Powermat, and A4WP (Alliance for Wireless Power). Things are very much in flux at the moment. For example, Google currently backs Powermat’s PMA technology. However, Google’s own Nexus 4 and its wireless charger use the Qi standard because it’s manufactured by LG. However, LG has also now joined the PMA.
While current devices overwhelmingly use the Qi standard, it looks like the PMA standard may be the most popular one in the future — which means that current devices may be incompatible with most wireless chargers in the future. It’s also possible that another standard may take over.
At Chinavasion we have Wireless Charging Back Cover for Samsung Galaxy S3. With this handy gadget you can upgrade your SGS3 with inductive charging function on the cheap. When the back cover is clipped on, just place the phone on any Qi compatible charging pad and your phone will start charging. No wires to connect!
The Qi Inductive Wireless Charging Pad is compatible with Qi standard phones and also with the above mentioned back cover. Enter the world of wireless charging today!

Taobao: “Weitao” Plans to Become a Mobile Shopping Mall

Last month, Chinese ebay equivalent Taobao announced a beta mobile app “Weitao”. It is due to be launched in the late May together with the new version of official Taobao app. Users can experience it on the html5 mobile phone. Some stores on Taobao have already tried out this public account platform.
According to “Weitao” beta report, Taobao will set up a wireless public account platform through “Weitao”. It can receive the flow of information provided by different account; the account operator of the flow of information will be coming from Taobao stores, media institutions, or one of the leaders in any consumption area. As soon as the app goes live, it will soon become the sub-channel of the official Taobao app.
In the early of 2011, Alibaba CEO Jack Ma had announced on the Taobao annual meeting that “We will SNS Taobao”. So this try will prove to be Taobao’s new attempt on SNS area.
As per Ali’s magazine executive editor Xu Wei, “Weitao” is not a separate app, but a channel in the new mobile Taobao app. If the official Taobao app is just a store, then with “Weitao”, this app will become a shopping mall, where consumers can not only shop, chat but also play or entertain as well.
