Skype to Get 3D Video Calling Functionality?

Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Skype, Mark Gillett, confirmed that the company is working on 3D video calling functionality. Though he warns that it will still be awhile before such a feature is available – and probably longer yet until it is widely adopted – he also states that he “can imagine a day” when 3D use is more widespread.

With 3D technologies — and specifically for this project, 3D video calls — the users would require cameras capable of recording a 3D video. This setup would require users to have multiple cameras connected to the computer, all of them calibrated to a precise degree in relation to each other and positioned properly.

Said Gillett: We have [this technology] in the lab, we know how to make it work and we’re looking at the ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market … We’re in the first year of your TV at home potentially having a camera attached to it, but we’re several years away from the cameras capturing 3D in that context. You’ll see much more penetration of 3D on TVs, on computers and ultimately in smartphones, probably, ahead of seeing it for sending a video call.

The subject of 3D video aside, the executive also said that Skype is looking into offering 1080p video calls to devices other than the Xbox One, and that laptops and tablets would gain this ability before smartphones because of the processing power requirements. He also touched on the subject of Sony, saying it is possible such could come to the PS4.

Apple Patents iOS Unlocking Methods That Determine Level Of User Access To Device Features And Software

A big request from parents regarding iOS has been that Apple implement user accounts on its mobile devices, in order to make it so that a parent can sign in with greater access to device features and apps than a child, for instance. It’s a system that already has an analogue on the desktop, and that Google has seen fit to implement with multiple user accounts with varying levels of permissions for tablets running Android 4.3 and higher. A new patent granted to Apple today (spotted by AppleInsider) describes a way of changing device access depending on who’s doing the accessing.

Apple’s newly-awarded patent describes a system wherein the method used by a user to unlock a device via gesture-based input would determine what apps are made available, as well as what hardware functions. So, for instance, one gesture (could be the drawing of a specific shape or letter with a finger tip) might allow access only to games content on the phones, while another could offer up access to an entire category of apps provided through corporate deployment, but not to other features.
The system Apple has patented also allows for gestures to unlock the phone directly into specific apps, so that one could launch the email app and keep a user within that bit of software exclusively, for instance. Other incarnations could limit access to certain phone features, including the camera and mic, or to in-app purchases, locking down a device for worry-free sharing with a child.

Why Microsoft Bought Nokia and What It Means for You

Surprising news yesterday, Microsoft has bought up Nokia’s phone division for a whopping $7.2 billion. What does that mean for you? What will change for Nokia and why did Microsoft even buy them in the first place?
What does it mean for Microsoft and Nokia?
First, let’s have a look at what Microsoft is getting in return for its money.
•Nokia’s smartphone and mobile phone business, including the manufacturing and assembly bits.
•Nokia personnel, including the design team, the sales/operations team, and the Stephen Elop team.
•A bunch of patents, but not all the patents.
•The ability to license Nokia HERE map technology, but not HERE itself.
•A place to crash in Finland.
In a presentation, Microsoft says that bringing Nokia phone in-house “protects Widows Phone future” as having a hardware division now means that Windows phone will last as long as Microsoft does.
Nokia’s sales went down 24 percent only last quarter year over year. Even its dumbphone sales, usually Nokia’s strength, plummeted 39 percent. Things don’t look good for Nokia and Microsoft just threw them a lifeline.

What does this mean for you?
Not much. If you already own a Windows Phone, you won’t be getting much more Apps and if you’re planning on buying one soon, you’ll have a lot less options. HTC and Samsung are Microsoft only other partners and after this new coalition, support for both phone makers is going to die soon.

Nokia believes that China is the place where they can success and reach their goal and possibly reclaim their place on the throne in the phone market. Microsoft have attempted the phone market before but has proven to be unsuccessful so maybe with Nokia they can combine their ideas and create a terrific phone that will surprise the market and swing people towards them, or it could be like other attempts and fail miserably with a few mangers being blamed and sacked.
