Wikipedia is the world’s most popular and up to date encyclopedia. It is like an external brain of sorts that we can access anytime to gain knowledge about hundreds of thousands of topics, but only as long as we have internet access. That really doesn’t have to be the case though, since you can use Kiwix to download and read the entirety of Wikipedia completely offline.

The program is available as a portable application, but can also be installed the traditional way. When you launch it for the first time, it asks you to download the catalogue of available wikis, which you definitely must download. Once the catalog is ready, you can click on File > Browse library to see the list of available wikis you can download for reading offline. For purposes of testing, we downloaded Wikipedia in Simple English (730MB). If you want the more popular version – Wikipedia in English – you can download the sum total of it as updated till March 23rd, 2012 in the form of a 9.3GB download. You won’t find much information on latest topics like the Xbox One or the Royal Baby, obviously, but that won’t be an issue for most people.

You can quickly search for new wikis to download from the Library view, download and ‘install’ in one click, add notes, bookmark pages, export pages in PDF or HTML, and read multiple Wikipedia pages with tabination. For advanced users, it can also be set up as a web server allowing people on your network to access Kiwix from the local server without downloading huge files. It works really well, and is completely free.

Feedly Client For Windows 8

Readiy is a new Windows Store app that successfully brings the power of Feedly to Windows 8 and Windows RT while being loyal to the platform’s Modern UI. The app syncs with Feedly, meaning you don’t need to maintain yet another feeds list. Since Feedly launched its own cloud early in July, it means you can directly sign in with the service. To begin, launch the app and let Readiy connect to Feedly by clicking ‘Sign Up with Google’ or ‘Sign in’.

The tile-based design of the app is very intuitive, making it easier to navigate on RT and Windows 8 slabs. It’s exceedingly simple and lets you handle your feeds with ease. The home screen displays all the items from your currently subscribed feeds. To reveal further content, just swipe horizontally. You can also hit ‘All Items’ on the top and then select your desired RSS subscription from the menu that appears.
The dropdown menu displays titles of your current RSS subscriptions accompanied by the number of unread items in each. Readiy also keeps your custom folder structure from Feedly intact. The dropdown menu next to your subscriptions lets you sort the view between oldest or newest first and also mark all the items as read in one go.
The app bar gives you a few more options to play with, such as letting you Pin any feed to your Start Screen, filter your feeds, mark all feeds as read, and manually sync with Feedly servers. The only shortcoming with Readiy is that it doesn’t give you any option to add new RSS subscriptions, meaning you’ll have to do that from Feedly’s own web interface or its dedicated apps for other platforms. Apart from that, it’s a solid Feedly client for Windows 8.

JustDelete.me Helps You To Erase Your Digital Life

Deleting your unused or unwanted online accounts can be a huge pain and in some cases, is virtually impossible. But a new site, JustDelete.me, makes the process a little less difficult.
Launched last week by developer Robb Lewis and designed by Ed Poole, JustDelete.me provides a growing list of Internet-connected services, with links and information about the account deletion process. When available, direct links to account delete pages are provided. JustDelete.me also categorizes each service into “easy,” “medium,” “hard,” and “impossible,” depending on the difficulty of deleting an account from that service. The site also provides tidbits of information about account deletion for each service.

Part Instapaper, part RSS reader, part ebook reader, Dotdotdot (dotdotdot.me) is an excellent tool for reading long-form articles and stories. This browser-based RSS feed reader also has dedicated apps for iPhone and iPad.


Taptu

Taptu could be a great magazine-like RSS feed reader and news compiler for those who appreciate sexy interface design and mobile apps, but the service has quite a few kinks to iron out.


Tiny Tiny RSS

Tiny Tiny RSS is a DIY platform for building an RSS feed reader where you are in charge.


Feedspot

Feedspot is a freemium online RSS feed reader with straightforward implementation and design. It includes a number of ways to share content, both externally and within the service itself, as well as save content to other sources, such as Evernote, Pocket, and Instapaper.

Windows 8 App Launcher

Program launchers are the best way to keep your desktop shortcuts manageable, and provide a more efficient solution for running applications rather than having your desktop cluttered with icons. The approach adopted by these programs varies for each, with some being like the OS X dock, while others working via system tray icons, launcher rings at the center of your desktop, hot corners and what not.

Download 8Stack

Developed by deviantART member LangLe, 8Stack is another application launcher designed to work with Windows 8 by taking advantage of the operating system’s Modern UI. It displays a vertical sidebar on the right side of the screen, from where you can easily launch your applications. While it’s not a perfect solution for launching each and every file or program, the app does provide quick access to popular programs, eliminating the need to enter the Start Screen in order to find and launch them. 8Stack doesn’t require any sort of installation and works out of the box. After downloading it via the link provided at the end of this post, just extract the contents of the ZIP archive to an easily accessible location. You can then create a shortcut to the program’s EXE file on your desktop for quick access.

However, It’s worth noting here that 8Stack isn’t that feature-rich nor customizable. It only allows you to launch a predefined set of popular third-party programs including Firefox, Photoshop, CCleaner and many more, (provided they are installed on your system). However, the app will still display icons of all these apps, including the ones not present on your machine. The app’s usage is pretty plain and simple; upon launching it, 8Stack displays a vertical black bar on the right edge of the screen, carrying different shortcuts under Programming, Applications and Websites sections. If you’ve used Windows Phone, it’ll look quite familiar to you, since it resembles the App list quite closely. 8Stack also lets you launch popular websites like Facebook and Bing without having to enter their URL in your web browser.
