We May Soon Be Driving On Roads Made Of Recycled Plastic

VolkerWessels-Dutch-Plastic-Road1-537x398
Remember when you were setting up your Hot Wheels track and imagining it were a real thing? Well, you may have been on to something.
Thanks to VolkerWessels, we may all soon be driving on plastic roads. The company is working on roads that will be made of recycled plastic and would consist of snap-together parts, much like toy construction blocks.
VolkerWessels-Dutch-Plastic-Road-Hollow-Interior-537x447
Naturally, one of the biggest benefits of having plastic roads is that laying them down will be much quicker and easier. Thanks to the Lego-type construction and hollow space “inside” the road, the installation of cables and pipes, as well as making repairs will also be significantly simplified.
Will a plastic road stand up to the task of having heavy vehicles pressing down on it, different weather conditions and temperature changes?
According to VolkerWessels, absolutely yes.
Reusing the material will actually make a plastic road more durable to harsh conditions, allowing it to last longer and withstand greater temperature ranges. Plastic roads are also able to survive the strain from vehicles and weather with a much weaker chance of cracking and corrosion. Thus, the new roads promise to live three times as long as their traditional counterparts.
True, at this stage, this type of road is just a concept. However, the future may not be too far ahead. We have already seen a solar powered bike lane near Amsterdam and it appears the Dutch are pioneers in new road technology as Rotterdam is eager to try out the plastic road and report back. According to VolkerWessels, this may all happen within the next 3 years.

VolkerWessels is a Dutch group of companies with over 15, 000 employees and offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, UK and Canada. The company is involved in construction, building and property development, infrastructure, technology and telecoms, as well as supplies and marine services.
Previous major projects completed by VolkerWessels include the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Euroborg Soccer Stadium

Skype For Business Is Good For Business

Microsoft made the announcement recently that they’ve made the leap from the original Lync program (which actually used to be called the Star Trekish Microsoft Office Communicator) to Skype for Business; a separate interface from the widely-used Skype application that intends to make business calls and messaging even better than ever. This is good news, considering Facebook’s recent break-up with Skype in favor of its own technology to power video calls inside its Messenger app.skype_for_business.jpg!slider

But does Skype for Business live up to its hype?
When Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, it didn’t waste any time integrating Skype’s features and technology into its other platforms, including Live Messenger and Xbox Live. But with all the good that the platform had to offer the corporate world, Microsoft Lync wasn’t going to be big enough to hold all that it could do. Besides, capitalizing on the more well-known name, Skype means that even everyday consumers will know the what and how of Skype for Business.
Right off the bat, one of the most popular features is certain to be the ability to use your desk phone for audio. It’s not required, of course, since that would defeat the purpose of having a separate app to make calls. You could just use the phone, right? But companies will find that having a Skype for Business account while still being able to take advantage of the phone handset for audio will mean increased call clarity while still saving a tremendous amount of money on a long-distance international calling plan for the office phones.
People who already use Skype for personal accounts are going to feel right at home in the Skype for Business dashboard, but newcomers will still be able to navigate quite easily after a few minutes’ use. The Quick Action buttons make the process very self-explanatory, offering up the options to make calls, use video, instant message, and more.
Skye users are probably familiar with sending a receiving files within the IM box, but Skype for Business now offers a preview box, so you don’t have to lose any connection speed while downloading the file. This preview lets you open it and navigate through the file right in the same window where you’re video chatting.
Of course, there’s no point in calling anything a business tool if you can’t set-up a multi-user meeting. Skype for Business has that covered too, and includes easy access buttons along the side view of the screen to make it all happen.
There are a host of other features and updates that will make veterans and first-timers alike take to the platform, all while keeping costs down and maintaining a level of connectivity that can benefit any type of business. And with the longevity of both Skype and Microsoft powering it, it’s a safe bet that the functionality won’t disappoint.

Mozilla Update And Calls For Move Away From Insecure HTTP

One of the top three web browsers has issued an update today, opening up the beta of Mozilla 38.0. This is just another in an ongoing line up of adjustments, tweaks, and bug fixes that has kept FireFox in the forefront of both users” and developers’ minds.
Mozilla
What may be more interesting is the speculation that Mozilla may be getting away from HTTP and shifting to the more secure HTTPS. The more secure designation used to be relegated to online payment systems and stood as a hallmark of security for inputting personally identifiable and sensitive financial information on the web. Now, with more and more vocal support for the security protocol, key people have come forward and said the time has come to move away from HTTP.
One individual, security engineer Richard Barnes, told The Register UK that everyone from communications platforms to the government have been calling for a more secure web, and that the only way to do that is to move towards full-scale adoption of HTTPS. He’s even proposed a plan to phase out HTTP in order to move to a more secure web.
“Having an overall program for HTTP deprecation makes a clear statement to the web community that the time for plaintext is over — it tells the world that the new web uses HTTPS, so if you want to use new things, you need to provide security,” said Barnes.
Mozilla is not one to shy away from game-changing innovations. They’re the whole reason other browsers have moved towards tabs, for example. They’re latest update includes preferences tabs, suggested tiles, a reading list feature, and the ability to share windows in a conversation, among other changes. But let’s see how long it will be before the full-fledged security protocol demand is in place.
