Norton Zone, new secure file sharing service officially released

Symantec recently announced Norton Zone for consumers, a new secure file sharing service that allows users to safely access, sync and share photos, videos and documents from any of their PC, Mac, Android or iOS devices. Norton Zone has been in beta all this time – since late last year – but two days back, Norton Zone was officially released and made available to all.
Norton Zone is a FREE personal cloud service that lets you safely share your photos, videos, and documents from your computer, smartphone, and tablet. Norton Zone lets you decide who can access your folders. To sign up for Norton Zone, create a Norton Account. If you already have a Norton Account, just sign in to Zone using your existing email and password. To begin adding files to Norton Zone, you’ll first need to locate the Zone icon in the system tray of your taskbar and open your Zone folder. Drag-and-drop videos, photos, documents and more into it and start sharing.
This new service works great on Windows, Windows RT, Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. Each app is designed to take advantage of the devices’ unique technology and security advantages. You can get the Norton Zone Cloud File Sharing app for Windows 8 from the Windows Store.

Add Image and Video Thumbnails to Twitter’s Web Interface

twitter-app
Chrome: Twitter’s web interface generally pales in comparison to dedicated apps like Tweetbot, but Previeweet adds much-needed image thumbnails to your timeline to make the interface more app-like.
The extension is incredibly simple. Once you install it, just refresh your timeline, and you’ll suddenly see thumbnails to the right of Tweets with multimedia that weren’t there before. The thumbnails also include a small icons indicating whether they’re pulling from YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, or some other source. Of course, officially-sanctioned services like Vine videos and Twitter photos will still open a large preview within the Tweet if you click the thumbnail, but others like Instagram will open a new tab.
If you’re stuck using Twitter’s web interface, you should also consider learning its keyboard shortcuts and installing the Classic Retweet extension. These add-ons won’t make it quite as powerful as a native app, but they certainly narrow the gap.

7 Days Without Email: Less Stress, More Productivity

slave_to_email

For some of us, being able to completely ditch email would be a dream. The pileup of correspondence and notifications can become distressingly excessive. Former Lifehacker editor Kevin Purdy recently spent a week without email for ITworld—and it brought along its own kind of anxiety. A lot of what makes email seem unbearably unmanageable is a lack of structure. As Purdy says, the things that make it terrible are actually the same things that make it great. Namely, the fact that anyone can reach you with any kind of news, and prioritizing it all can go a long way:
“If you know that most of the good email that comes through gets your attention, you can rest your mind when it comes to the other stuff. When you get to it, too, you can plow through it quickly, because you can trust that you will notice the difference between “Jim Rogers wants to connect on LinkedIn” and “You are invited to speak, expenses paid, at a conference in Lyon, France.”
There are many ways to help make email more productive, and many of the things that Purdy decides to implement upon returning to his Gmail inbox are all worth checking out:
It might seem like a little bit of a hassle at first, but once you put in the initial amount of work, you’ll start dreading your inbox much less. Be sure to hit the link and read the whole thing, it’s great: 7 days without email: Taming the tyrant

Microsoft’s IllumiRoom Turns Your Room Into the Game

Microsoft is closer to bringing gamers a more immersive experience through Illumiroom, according to documents released online this week.
illumi
Microsoft’s IllumiRoom uses a Xbox Kinect and a projector to extend the gaming experience beyond the borders of the television. While a prototype of this was presented at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, documents released on Microsoft’s Research hub indicate the project has moved beyond proof-of-concept.
The IllumiRoom first uses the Kinect’s camera to get a sense of the player’s living room. Then, the wide-field project, which sits behind the player, projects portions of the gameplay onto the surrounding living room landscape to achieve a broader sense of immersion.
