Google explains ‘How Search Works’ with new interactive site

Google has launched a new animated website called “How Search Works.” It’s an interactive scrolling graphic that shows what goes on behind the scenes every time someone types a query into Google Search, broken into three distinct sections: one on Google’s massive web-crawling and indexing operation (covering 30 trillion pages), another on its algorithms and ranking strategy, and a final section on how it fights and removes spam.
The site complements existing resources, including this blog, the help center, user forums, Webmaster Tools, and in-depth research papers.
A few things you’ll find:
  • An interactive, graphical explanation of Google Search
  • A view into major search algorithms and features
  • A 43-page document explaining how search precision evaluations work
  • A live slideshow of spam removal
  • Graphs illustrating the spam problem and how they fight it
  • A list of policies that explain when and what content should be removed
