Pay-To-View YouTube Channels Are A Fact

Youtube subscription
After months of rumors, YouTube announced in a blog post today that they are launching a pilot program to test subscription fees for channels.
Starting at $0.99 per month, selected YouTube partners will be able to charge for their content. While payments themselves certainly aren’t new to Google’s video service – renting video’s is already possible since last year – paying for content made by YouTube partners is new. The pilot program’s early partners include the UFC and SesameStreet which will offer a 14 day trial period and in some cases a discount on a yearly subscription. According to the post, paid channels will roll out as a “self-service” feature for many of YouTube’s partners.
For now, it looks like most paid channels are going to charge for reruns but if a subscription fee would start to catch on, we might start to see exclusive content for subscribers.
